Thread Starter | in-ear monitors for mixing
hi, i'm looking for in-ear monitors as neutral, occurate, well balanced.. as possible for studio mixing.
I was interested in a headphone but by the interest of in-ear for the comfort and isolation, i would like to know if there are some equivalent in-ears comparables to headphones like the dt880 ?
thank you so much . drouchka

I have never mixed with in ears, nut I have placed mics on drum and other loud sources like guitar amps with my Westones.

I wouldn't mix with in ears. Even the best ones don't compare to quality reference headphones. Even then, you should mix with monitors to get the most accurate portrayal of your sound.
If you want to try it anyway, take a look at Ultimate Ears, Sennheiser, AKG, Beyer Dynamic, Sony.

I have mixed with my Ultimate Ears UE7 Pro's before. Although I wouldn't recommend doing a final mix on them unless you had to while on a plane or train for some reason. The mix translated alright but definitely needed some tweaking and tightening.

thank you so much . drouchka | I can't speak to a recording application, but I have mixed live with my Sensaphonics with good results. This was in a large tent at a "Folk" festival (lots of indie bands crossed my stage, all electric). My shifts were 12 hours, so I would wear my Musician's Ear plugs (also Sensaphonics) and use a pair of Sony headphones for PFL. One year I forgot the Sonys, but had thrown my IEM's in my pack at the last minute, so I thought "well maybe this will provide hearing protection as well as PFL etc.". So I mixed a bit, pulled out the IEM's, had a listen to the PA (a nice little line array), sounded fine...put the IEM's back in, repeated this a few more times and decided it was working. Went all weekend with the IEM's in, and got the same very positive response from both audience and bands that I'd gotten in previous years. YMMV!
best,
Ike

yeah i know the best way is to mix in speaker monitors, but traveling, i need good headphones/earphones.
So to summarize, the in-ears would have no advantage compared to a headphone for mixing?
I'd better buy a headphone so unanimously?

woh, the ultimate ears reference monitors seems to be what i'm looking for.
Are there similar models less expensive ( max 700$ ), as efficient as a dt 880, for mixing ?

| UE Reference Monitors
They sound really nice, and after a few hours of using them, am looking forward to using them in a live (loud) situation to get a feel for isolation with big ol subwoofers working.
I set up a small PA in my garage and cranked it up, then pulled up mix on my laptop. it was kind of like those old 'sensaround' movie theaters I felt the subs, but the audio was coming from a different time and place. I am wondering if perhaps a tiny bit of delay of the headphone send would help this? Anybody?

I would think that if you gave away a set of IEMs to everyone who bought the recording, you could be reasonably sure they were hearing the same thing as your mix. While no two acoustic spaces are identical, at least they have air as a common transmission medium. I've never mixed on headphones and was happy with the result when I played the same mix over speakers. I have mixed a lot of stuff over regular monitors that sounded great on headphones. I wouldn't spend a bunch of money on a non- traditional monitor setup without first auditioning that setup and hearing the results on regular speakers for myself.
