Who are the biggest Slutz??

Is there someone out there who's got every bit of kit going. I would of thought the major studio's should have the lot, but nope. They seem lacking on certain outboard, it's like the head honcho picks what the studio should have (seems silly but theres always hire I guess).

At this stage of the game having the lot probably turns into something resembling the Getty art collection.

Who's mad/clever enough to never sell off old gear, but just KEEP IT ALL.

So who is the biggest Slut you know (you!!)?

definately the biggest slut I know is running a backline company over here in belgium. As a backline company he has the most impressive collection in brand and type of drums / percussion / guitar amps / bass amps / synths / DJ stuff / .... at least 2 pieces of each. On top of that as a pure private hobby he also has a recording studio ... mostly based on vintage gear .... comp's / pre's / eq's / plates / tapes ... and most importantly ... a closet of vintage mics (or should I say banksafe) that makes most major studio facilities I know look like a home studio. for pure private pleasure .... sigh ....

Bil VornDick.

I knew him, barely, back in the 60s, and exchanged a couple
of notes recently. He has, of course, a serious career
as a producer and magician down in Nashville. He said
that he build a nice house/studio outside town
and populated it with cool stuff.

From other sources, I read that he has a great collection
of "to die for" mics.

Bil has some lively mics and lovely gear, but he's definitely not the biggest gearslut in town. Of course, he doesn't have to me - he can get better sounds with two tin cans and a piece of string than most of us can get with a studio...

He bought an old Moose Lodge on one of the highest hills in Nashville - a very cool place to hang.

The big studios can't have all the outboard in the world. If they did then nobody would book them. At the very top a lot of engineers and producers make money by renting their gear to the project. If the studio already has it then they can't get the cash from the rental.

All you need to make a record is a mic, some tape and maybe some bad reverb...

Must be nice to have that kind of touch, wonder if I'll
get it if I keep at it for 35 more years.

Of course, I bet that there are lots of folks in Nashville
with serious studios that are not on Music Row.
You constantly hear about this star or that act
putting a professional studio in the barn next to their
house.

Are the big commercial studios there hurting like
the mid-sized ones are here in the DC area?

Jack Joseph Puig has some really nice stuff, although I bet Mutt Lange's garage sale would be a thing of beauty now that he uses mostly Pro Tools.

From his posts here, it seems like Slipperman has got the bug pretty goddamn bad as well.

Sure, but there are exceptions; while there are studios closing here on a regular basis (Darkhorse for one), there are also studios who are turning away business - one guy I know is considering adding a third room because his other two are completely booked...

And like everywhere else, there are studios who don't seem to be working from a logical business plan - there's no way that they could actually pay for themselves, but the (wealthy) owners don't seem to be concerned.

Well, it was for sale a few months ago. I don't know any more than that.
