problem: digital feedback loop...

hello friends, i am trying to troubleshoot a feedback loop thats really bringing me down.

here is the issue: i am using an RME 96/52 hammerfall pci card with the latest drivers lightpipe out to an apogee da16x analog out to a Daking 522770b (line level in) then to a cranesong spider(xlr in) lightpipe back in to the RME. the wordclock is set as spider master then RME then apogee terminated. the settings in the DSP are all showing proper wordclock sync and sample rate. the problem is there is a high pitched digital feedback loop being created somewhere in the chain. this loop is happening without the DAW being open. i have tried switching the clock so that the apogee is master and the spider terminates, but the loop persists. i also tried using the ADAT as sync just as a troubleshooting measure and the loop is still there.....any thoughts? .....

Have you tried checking the monitoring software of the RME to make sure that the audio reaching the inputs isn't being routed straight to the corresponding outputs? You say that your path is:

RME -> Apogee D/A -> Daking -> Cranesong A/D -> RME

...sounds like an analog feedback loop. I think you have to turn off input monitoring or change something so inputs 1 & 2 (or whatever you're using) are monitored on 3 & 4 (or somewhere else). I don't think sync / termination is your problem.
