Coles Manufacturer

Hi Slutz,

I've been searching about Coles and haven't found the manufacturer. What corporation is it? Who builds them? Just curious...

Hey,

It seems that Coles Electroacoustics read this thread!
And there's also a new add from independent audio, or was it here before?

If you are in Canada call Noah at Pro Audio Canada. They carry Coles now.

If someone from Coles is actually reading this- whats with the connecter?!?!?!? I love the mic, but it's size and weight don't make it the easiest thing to place. Why in the world doesn't it come with an XLR? Does anyone in the world use it without the XLR adapter? Just build it with an XLR. And don't change anything else. It's a wonderful mic. Thank you.

I thought I was gonna find more info on the website. I've heard that some people own lots of these mics because a lot of models with different impedances where produced. So...I think I'm wrong...or???

Hi Pupo,

I don't know THAT much about em' (I just use em' - my favourite O/H now..) but I think the new Coles are all 300 Ohm now.

I think the older ones had a higher impedence, not sure though.

Again, I could be wrong on all counts...

All I do know is that I can plug the newer 4038's into my API and they sound wonderful.

Still gotta try the 4040's.

Hi Ol' Betsey,

Thanx for the info. I did tried them on O.H.'s and didn't like them that much. I think I have to try them more and play with them a lot. The same day I tried 441's 87's Beyer 130's 4011's and 4038's where for me and other 6 engineers, the "take those out of there now" mics.

Yes you do....

I am still amazed that the 4040 is not talked about very much (if at all). I stand on the highest hill and shout about how dreadfully cool this mic is all the time. It is a heavyweight contender for sure.

Nice ribbon goodness with all kinds of smooth but more open top end than you would expect and more detail. It's like taking all the things you would want in a LDC and a ribbon and rolling them into one kick a$$ package. Maybe not u47 but not like any other ribbon I have ever tried that's for sure.

Just don't get why people are not raving about this mic. The audio world is a strange and fickle place. The 4040 just has not made it to "The Flavor of the Month Club" yet I guess.

Really you should check it out. Sorry to get OT.

I recently posted somewhere around here that I loved them...
FWIW is a good deal and they worked better than the Coles in this specific situation.
I really was expecting more from the Coles, for other things for sure they just kick ass though.

@ NSN - Yeah I'm definitely gonna check out the 4040's. To be honest, I look forward to that (if you can call it this?) 'newer old sound' of the Coles.

@ Pupo - I can totally dig it. Different strokes etc...

I can say that I've used 160's (my least favourite on O/H but nice on ambients), 121's (which used to be my 'go to' overhead) and the 4038's which are now my favourite.

In my book the 4038's certainly don't sound anything like a DPA or an 87 and really, depending on what your looking for, they would have stood out like a sore thumb in that company but I wouldn't give up on em' just yet.

Who knows, maybe it really isn't the sound your after but the thing is, I used 414, 87, 441, 4033, MK12 and then finally started getting closer (and I mean really close) to the sound I was after with the Royers.

And you know the first time I tried the 4038's in my 'normal' O/H placement, I just thought 'Hmmm, there's really got to me more to these'. Then my drummer and I started experimenting with different placements, a few inches here, a few inches there, up a bit here, behind over here and then it just kinda HIT.

Then I messed with a little EQ, added a little compression (I simply love the API 2500 for drums) and WHAM.

My drummer was like 'Jesus, I knew that kit sounded good but, oh my god' and that was it.

And that is where I'm at now.

Are they the be all and end all of mics? Nah. But maybe give them a little bit more of a chance?

Oh... And they look cool too.

Hang in there and good luck.
