Thread Starter | What firewire drive are you using?
I had a drive crap out today and bought a LaCie and it keeps giving me the 'Fragmented too slow' error message. My buddy that teaches at MI called me tonight and says the students stopped using LaCie at the school, that they're not happening. What R U using for mac protools???

I have three different types and different manufacturers. And I keep up-to-date backups on all three all the time. This is very important. If you don't have those bits in three different places you don't have them.. |

I'm using a G-Technology drive. http://www.g-technology.com/ I chose the quad interface (USB 2, FW, FW800, eSATA). It is fanless and also looks great. |

I went cheap for mine, WD 120GB and slapped it in a Bytek enclosure. Perfect hassle free performance for 3 years. I love these threads because eveybody has a fave - until it dies a miserable death , whereafter that brand becomes forever known as the 'spawn of satan'.I can never bring myself to buy Maxtor again, even though I know they're perfectly good drives |

I have a GT51 : http://www.glyphtech.com/site/products_gt051.html Significantly quieter than any other FW drive I've used. Comes with overnight advance replacement warranty. Once you've bought the housing, the Glyph 'keys' are cheaper than buying a new drive.... I have several for archiving (they come in a sturdy moulded plastic case), and also run my VI's from one. Highly recommended. Storcase: http://www.storcase.com/DataSilo/ds321.asp also come highly recommended.... They are the enclosure of choice at Air Lyndhurst FWIW. LaCie are a pile of poo..... |

Avastor - designed for pro use, great service. A little more expensive but worth it. Just did a remote and had a drive fall 5 ft. to the cement floor while it was writing. It still works! (Do NOT try this at home.) http://www.avastor.com/ Best....H |

LaCie is not a drive, it's an enclosure. The drive is mostly the issue - you want AT LEAST a 7200 rpm drive w/ minimum 16 mb cache. Random access speed is also important. Drive noise, case fan Noise, interface protocol, and PS are also issues. Just make sure you're comparing your apples to apples. ![]() Also, drive set up/ config in your recording/ storage chain is important. What you're using to write to it, and how. Etc., etc.

As for firewire drives, I have been using LaCie d2 drives. I have not had issues with this model. I have had issues with their Porche models. Is that the model you bought?

I use the OWC stuff for backup and SFX libraries, but record to an internal drive in the G5, not the system drive, but the other one. I think they are both Maxtor, not sure.

James, You may be better off making a trip to Best Buy today. They carry the Western Digital Caviar internal drives. Very, very good drives. I have these inside my computers. I'll show you how to install it if you require assistance. As I mentioned before, I use the OWC FW drives as well. Although, I think the drives they are installing in the enclosures are Hitachi. Not that this is a bad thing. |

Hey James, Think about adding a 10,000 RPM WD Raptor inside the G5, and using it for work and then pulling projects onto a firewire drive when you have completed a project. The Raptor is now available in 150 gig, and is smokin fast and I've never yet heard of one fail. I use a partition on my system drive to backup the current project from the Raptor every time I shut down just in case the Raptor should die. That way I don't need to keep a firewire drive connected, which I feel helps keep the computer from bogging down.

Well I've used the Maxtor One Touch II for awhile now with zero issues. I can actually track to it, about 32 tracks @ 24/96, although I don't use it for tracking, only backups. I track to a 10K RPM WD Raptor, then I do a save session copy as to another 10K WD Raptor for mixing. Then copy the entire directory to the One Touch for a backup.

I use these Pacific Pro Audio drives: http://www.pacificproaudio.com/drives.asp I first read about them in Tapeop, tried out a couple and they've been flawless. I think I have about 10 of them now and (knock on wood), no problems. I've had Maxtor, Lacie and WD all fail. I do also use a terabyte Lacie as my ongoing backup of all projects and that seems fine though it's noisey as hell. |

| Avastor is our Choice
We use Avastor drives exclusively these days. LaCie. No way. Those things cost me a client. Never again! We looked at the new Quantegy FHD3 drive only to find the power supply, a line lump, is only 14 watts. The Seagate drive itself needs 13 watts just to spin. These things look like trouble so they're NYET. To contrast, Avastor has an internal 40 watt power supply. Actually this is a Fantom enclosure anyway. Here's kind of a question. What do you back up your drives to? A tape drive or another drive? We're kind of taking the lazy route and backing up to another firewire drive which we then disconnect. |
