Thread Starter | sell yamaha hs50m get genelec 8020a?
hi, this is my first post, ive been reading the forums for years and find the information second to none. i need some help ![]() I have a tiny little studio in a walk in wardrobe, my deskspace is 77cm which can fit a 19 inch monitor on the wall and 2 wall mounted yamaha hs50m , a master keyboard and keyboard and mouse, and that's it, I can barely even sit its so cramped I had to install my pc in my loft to cut out the pc fan noise. I produce house/dance music and my mixes translate pretty well considering , i monitor very quietly during mixing as the acoustic space can sound a bit boxy, professional mastering usually sorts out and mistakes problem is I'm bored with the Yamaha's, they don't inspire me when I'm writing and they are slightly too big for my tiny space, they just arnt pleasant to listen to recently i listened to a pair of genelec 8030's side by side with the Yamaha's in a shop and i loved them , the stereo imaging was superb but i think the 8030's might be slightly too big for my space, so I was thinking about getting the 8020's. they are only a 4 inch driver but would fit my space much better. problem is they only go down to 66hz and my yamahas go down to 55hz (5 inch driver) i wont have the opportunity to try the gennies before i buy and i don't have space for 2 sets of monitors, ill have to sell the yammies to buy the gennies. is the loss of the extra 8 hz going to make a difference? would appreciate any advice Last edited by nytro; 20th January 2011 at 07:36 PM.. | Lives for gear | sell yamaha hs50m get genelec 8020a?
I use the 8020 for location monitoring as well as mixing at home, together with a pair of 8250s and B&W speakers. The 8020s are excellent and many of my student friends have bought them as an entry point into higher-end monitoring. I've never found them lacking in the bass department, in fact I usually set the dip switches to roll off some bass. I also had to use them as PA at a production party where the 'organizer' forgot to organize music. During the entire evening there were at least three sound engineering students staring at then and exclaiming 'that's a lot of music from such a small speaker' or 'that's great bass from those small gennies'. Anecdotal, but fun. |

| Genelec 8030a is awesome
Hi, was actually looking at getting yamaha hs50 as my second monitor as i have the genelec 8030a which I love. I like the Gen a lot that because of it I sold my KRK Rokit 6 cos When I listen to my sound on it and throw them into Rokit it just sounds like toy to me. I might not like the yamaha after buying it that's why I'm just curious to know if you find them good haven heard the Genelecs...? cheers |
