travel guitar (small)

I'm looking for a small travel guitar with nylon strings (although not absolutely necessary--steel could do if the sound is good).
Any suggestions? Price range up to $400.

Looks like the SoloEtte @ around $800 has been licensed to Aria who seem to be making a sub $300 version .

the only one I've used is the martin.

I'd pack it on a trip if it were my only option.

Just included the other one since I ran across it.

I didn't like the martin backpacker. Very awkward to play, because it has no balance.
The one I'm most considering is the Mahogany Baby Taylor. (Looking just for a traditional, but smaller guitar.) I'm wondering if there are any others that are competitive to the Taylor. I'm not going for the Baby Martin, because I already have a Martin acoustic. The warmer Mahogany sound might give me some options for recording, although really it is only to travel with.

i got the 300 dollar martin. it's small and has a finish that keeps it from getting f***ed up. i like the sound and you could probably put some nylon strings on it. otherwise just get a cheap epiphone or a $150 mexican nylon string guitar.

Well, certainly if you can go with a guitar as large as that, you can get a better instrument.

I figured you might not be able to carry something that large.

I think the backpacker is playable only with a strap, and then, yes, the balance is a problem.

I usually prefer Martin to Taylor, but in the case of the baby ones, the Taylor was the better one to me.

In case it matters, it's probably the only sub-$300 U.S. made acoustic guitar.

Washburn Rover.

Definitely my recommendation.

It is a steel string, but sounds and plays a million times better than the Backpacker, IMO.

I got mine for $130 or so, they should still be around for something like that.

Collings makes a baby guitar, but they are probably expensive... if it's a Collings, I'm sure it's good though.

Ditto on the Martin backpacker - it is ackward to play, but it does serve the purpose - VERY portable and light. It has served me very well in tons of remote location songwriting sessions.

VERY PORTABLE
Ackward to play
High action
Sounds mandolin-ish
Steel string
I have the one with the pick up - I've used the pick up a few times

Fairly satisfied - definitely better than a big clunky or heavy guitar for just grabbing and going. I think the "backpacker" name says it all. Although, personally, I do like the SOUND of a FULL sized guitar around a campfire way better.

Just my $.02
