altec 1599b or 1592b

hello there

i'm looking to buy and old altec pre (or something like it) ..

i need an extra pre (or 2) and i would like it to be something that i can push hard and get nice tube distortion from..

i have 2 x ua 6176 and a aurora GTQ MK3

any idea about the 2 different altecs i have mentioned or other models that i can find cheap..

all the best

Not tried the tube Altecs but the plug in 1588B/C variety, which I believe the 1592 is a part of, sound very 70's to me in a rather pinpointy way. This is not bad, I love that tone, but it's not what I'd call fullbodied, neither do they distort well.

If you want nice tube distortion I recommend this:

Just checked, yes they are, as both employ the "plug in the back" 1588B or C preamps. These things are not tube amps. These things in the back ARE the actual preamps:

Those things plugging in the back of the 1592 in post 4 ARE the actual preamps. Plug in style. Go in lots of different Altec boxes. They come in different varieties, like 1588B (basic and I think only 25dB or so gain) and 1588C (35dB gain and also send low voltage phantom power).

I have an Altec 1628, which used to be a 8 into mono mixer with 8 1588C's inside, but I modded it for separate outs so it's basically a pre box. Like I say, the 1588C's sound really nice to me and very specific. Good for certain jobs, pointy, defined sounding in an appealing way. I think Sufjan Stevens "Illinois" album is entirely these pres (which is a bit much for me but works still) and you get a fair idea about them having a listen. Not fat at all, but pointy.

If you want fat, distortion and such, check into Roberts 770 and old Akai M7/8 valve tape machines and have the pres ripped out/converted ...(what I did, see pic 1). Those things go from hovering-on-a-pillow-sound to full squealing burn. Beautiful! Talk to RodC on the TapeOp forum. He built mine. Very well and way to good value.
