Anyone ever heard of Lucas Engineering?

The site looks kinda like it's only half done.

Terry Manning has his hand in this. I think the company is named after his son (?).

My guess is that it's the real deal.

Yep Terry Manning is definitely involved. Wouldn't worry at all about its legitimacy.

Terry does post on here from time to time I think.

i believe the Counting Crows used one of his pre's, according to this site:

Crowsnest

"(TD) Tell me about the signal path for the vocals. Did you use any tube mic preamps or tube compression?

There's a guy named Frank Lacy who makes tube gear for me and (producer) Terry Maning. He calls his line of gear “Lucas.” When we recorded the organ we tried out these solid state pre-amps he made, and we liked them. They beat everything else so we decided to try them on the vocals. They had this funny quality: they made things sort of move toward you a few inches in the speakers. This worked well for Adam's voice. I still have them but it doesn't mean that I just use those on vocals. There's no telling what I'll use on any given day. For Adam's voice we got into that chain: the ‘47s through the Lucas pre-amps. We liked it so we did it a lot."

unfortunately, that's the ONLY reference I've ever seen for the Lucas gear ...

New Lucas URL

Hey guys.

Just saw this today.

There is a new and much better Lucas website:

Lucas Engineering

Updating the site every day, and finally getting gear photos and descriptions up.

We can only make so much, because everything is hand made to order, so we just never worried much about the website.

Now that we have the new CS-1 microphone going so well, I remembered finally to update!

Best regards,

Terry

I just bought the limiter (second hand), and I could not be more impressed...... not only in build quality, but sonically speaking, I have yet to use any UA175 style comp that can even come close to the Lucas.

Cheers to you Terry (and Frank) for building such a wonderful piece of kit. I look forward to buying more.

Wow, thanks!

I have seven of them, and have used them every day, on everything, for 18 years, but it's easy for me to say. So it's nice to hear when someone else agrees!

Best regards.

The tube EQ's look very interesting. I'd love to hear one some day.

I think the reason here is that we do NOT try to clone things. We are looking forward, not backwards, but always with an eye to what made vintage things great.

The trick is in knowing what works, and what doesn't...when to maintain a classic topology, and when to properly improve it.

T-Sauce, yes, the EQ's are amazing...they work in a different way than any other EQ out there.

Old thread but I just purchased an Equaliser second hand. I haven't been able to find much info other than the website, but I'm interested to hear anyone chime in with their experiences.

Otherwise I'll be the first. And since I write for a Pro Audio Blog maybe I'll be the first to review it.

The EQ

Hey Matthew. What would you like to know about the EQ?

I have used them every day, every session, for over 20 years now.

Thanks,

Terry
