Thread Starter | Vocal Recording Technique used here?
I stumbled on this video for a moment and was curious what the micing config in "tuts my barreh" suppose to achieve? The vocal recording in the video sounds a little distant/reverberant so is it typical of this type of vocal setup or maybe too much reverb was added during mixing. In particular, what's the bottom mic doing? Ambient off axis fig 8 source? also, what's that bottom mic? Just thought this vocal setup was quite intriguing. Has anyone used this config b4 or know of any major releases that use this particular vocal config? Thanks in advance. Regards Josef Horhay Mixing Engineer www.acoosticzoo.com |

I think you'll find when its a good singer many mic techniques will work whether they're orthodox or unorthodox....in this case...it wouldn't matter...not exactly the next pavarotti in the works... It sounds like reverb...unless the room is VERY ambient, i doubt there'd be that much reverb from that distance...generally on a lead vocal i'll just use a mic front and centre, and slightly adjust depending on the singer (as written in michael stavrou's mixing with the mind) moving the mic toward either side of the mouth can make the sound less or more bright depending on what side of their mouth they sing from. I might get a little more experimental with say a backing singer if i had the time. As for that bottom mic...not sure...looks a little like an md441 which is super cardioid... md441 when it used to be black:

looks like a kareoke recording booth where they would get hundreds of people going through paying money to sing a song. Rather than moving the mic for different people, they just have those 2 set up at different heights.. Just my guess.

Maybe even both running at the same time and they just use the feed from the one that sounds better....

i read a while back that zz top has done, or maybe always does, vox recording with a multiple mic setup. Dont know what type of mics or if theres a fancy name for it but basically, they have a couple condesners side by side and then another (maybe a ribbon i read) laying horizontally across the top. Then blend them together. Ive done this a time or two. Just have to jack around with it to avoid the phase issues. Sometimess it sounds cool and sometimes not worth the time. Is this a well known technique thats widely used? If so, does it have a name?
