Yeah that's it. Would be interesting to know if the mics in it are available separately under another name.

The ATM25 has so much more frequecy response than all the specialty kik mics its not even a contest. I've owned em all and this one is the only one to get anywhere close to the AKG D20 I had for a couple of years. Makes a great 'shouter' vocal mic.
awesome I love d20's have used the d25 also pretty sweet to. I have only had my atm25 on kick twice and not really experimented that much i was doing ruff tracks I'll have a bit of a tweak with placement and see how it goes. First time I used one was live and we used it for screamo vocals lol it's pretty good though.

I wouldn't say a 57, 52a or a d112 are alternative

I recently had nice results with a Neumann KMS 105.

Crown PZM 30d for the kick, just sit it on the blanket

you kind of hear the whole interior of the drum.

I also have an old Shure 55 "Elvis" mic that while somewhat band-limited, can be kind of a cool alternative inside the hole.

somebody mentioned 414 on the snare, I do this so often, I don't even think of it as an 'alternative'.

Had a session recently with just a kick, snare, hh, ride. Very vibey and open sounds so we were trying different mics. I had acquired four Oktava 319 mics a year ago so I broke one out for the snare. Sounded great!! We tried several mics on kick and the 319 sounded great here as well! And....you guessed it we ended up using the other two for a mono over and a mono hall mic. That's right folks, four 319s on a single kit. Who would have guessed.

I second what joeq said about the Shure 55 on kick - I always find it pleasantly surprising

CAD E100s makes both a great kick and snare mic. Too bad I only have one of them.

Neat trick I learned a few years back: beyer m 160 about two feet in front of the kick. Flip the phase, and prepare to rock.

Do you guys have the old 55s as the new one is just a 58 inside, Winehouse used a 55 on the daptone recordings for the drums and paired it with a rca 44a. Sounds great I have a ribbon might pair it witha 57 unidyne and see what happens. That was the only two mics on the kit.

I've gotten great sound of the whole kit with a pair of Fathead II's set up mid-side out front of the ride looking over at the snare. The drummer would no doubt point out that his playing was so special and iphone mic would have sounded great.

I really gotta get my hands on a ev 664, 664, 666 or 660 they amount of times people say how good these are on kick its really starting to give me itchy feet. Anyhow they're nearlly impossible to acquire in the uk, suck to be me.

I've got a 55 from 1949 which is my go-to 55, or if thats being used on something else (it kills on horns for instance), then I've got a cheap T.Bone GM55 copy which comes out.
I originally got the idea from seeing what Daptone were doing. On their own recordings with the Dap-Kings, they often use the 55 on it's own as a single mic. I've tried this and I found that it works great as long as you've got a pretty low pitched snare. I first tried it with a DW piccolo snare and the result can only be described as painful

A kick mic that worked swimmingly for me was the Royer R101. It was set up on outside of kick about 8-10" back I think. It was soooo thick and boomy. Boom for days. I always wanted to try it, but I was scared I'd ruin the ribbon. Then I thought "no guts, no glory!"

Snare top this weekend was a Beyer 201 and a 57. To be completely honest, though the sounds were different in a good way, I still don't see how people say the 57 is a horrible mic. I do want to hate it sometimes, but it always just works...

.
Try this for snare:

Top: ElectroVoice RE15:
Bottom: AKG D-12
(No, NOT the D-112 "Space Football", but this one):
Be advised that the subsequent treatment of this setup will probably be wildly different from what you're used to doing for a top/bottom setup.

Yeah, and if you happen to have a couple of extra D-12s let me know - I'll take 'em!

DPA 4003 on the snare, D12e and 47 FET on the kick. A Sony C-55p makes an interesting substitute for the 47 fet if there's one around.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Audio-Technica ATM450 on snare. And its design makes it super-easy to place it virtually any way you want to.
