Drum Group vs Track Copmression

What’s the difference between individual track compression on Kick, Snare and Toms as opposed to an overall compressor on a drum group.

My thinking has been that a drum group compressor interacts differently, as a Kick hit will affect a cymbal hit or ride etc.

Do some people use both track compression and Drum group compression (baring in mind I also use a touch of SSL style Mix Bus Compression as I mix (ALA Charles Dye MILAR)

Oh I also have been trying Voxengo Tapebus on the Drum Group – which actually gives a nice tape emul.

Any feedback would be really appreciated

PS I tried seaching - but found very little.

different application for me, and i do compress individually and as a group.

individually - treating kick, snare toms etc, you have really micro controll over the envelope, sound and character of each part individually.
group - putting it all together, glueing, macro controll and "slotting" it into it's place in the mix. and when using a colorfull compressor, you give all the group a identical sonic character and bring the interaction alive.

When people talk about using parallel compression on drums, are they compressing channels, group, or both?

Paralell compression involves creating two bus groups. On Drums for instance, one of the Drum bus groups is compressed or squashed while the other buss group is left uncompressed. In the case of drums you may also be compressing individual channels as well as the bus group - but there are no absolute rules on that part of it. Hope that helps, cheers!
