Thread Starter | Shure SM57 Unidyne III ??
I stumbled across this old SM57. It looks like any other 57, only the sticker on the grill is a little different and says: "Shure Brothers Incoporated Model SM57 Unidyne III", where "Unidyne III" is written in this kinda big "1960's alike" font. Is this a "copy" or just a really old 57? It sounds good. |

Yup, its the real deal..... In my experience they sound better than the new ones- much smoother high end. Very similar to the Shure (also Unidyne III) 545

I spent some time A-B ing it on a Marshall 1/2 stack against one of the shiny brand new 57's, and the old Unidyne III was a little better.....not quite so "choked" with a little more air. I made sure to put a little marker dot on the grill cloth, so that the difference I was hearing was not the mic positioning. I am not sure why, it just is....

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to comment on the pair of unidyne IIIs I got for 40 bucks! They sound pretty great! Definitely different than my newest 57. The new one sounds boxy and like there is a sock placed over the diaphragm. The Unidynes have a more enhanced sounding top-end then the new one. I have another older 57 that has bigger lows with more output and more top compared to the new one I have, but it also has more handling noise. Anyway, that one I'm loving on guitar cab. I'm looking forward to putting the Unidynes through their paces. It's cool to have 3 usable flavors...
