Hardware or software monitoring?

Hi,
I've just finished setting up my studio with my daw running linux and ardour and a lot of other cool apps. i get a fairly low latency wich is great. I have a RME Multiface wich gives me the possibility to monitor any input and i also have a console.
Now i was wondering what people used the most, software monitoring or hardware monitoring.

I would obviously go for hardware as i get total 0 latency but, then if I'd do that, what would be the point of having a low latency in the first place?

Do big studios use hardware or software monitoring?

I guess software is only good if you want to use plugins while tracking, or to monitor a vocalist with some reverb or something.
Then again everybody uses some sort of outboard gear, well, at least most of us. So why would one go through all the mess of setting things up for low latency if it all ends up not being used?

I've actually been struggling with my Digi002R and logic. I never noticed the latency unless i really started using lots of plugs with Protools, but with Logic it seems to address the interface a little different. I have the interface set to 32 samples as the i/o buffer, but i'm using it at 44k. I figure upping it to 88 should cut my problem in half right?
