Adobe Audition - anyone using this?

I usually think I'm quite up on computer music type stuff, but I only just noticed this thing. It seems to have come out of nowhere.

http://store.adobe.com/products/audition/overview.html

Does anyone have any background info - kind of looks like they've poached the guy who wrote Acid or something (pure speculation on my part), or perhaps the Apple Soundtrack guy? Is it any good? Is it a serious contender against the Nuendos, PT's etc. of this world? Or is it more of a hobby type thang?

Just wondering. Can't see I'd ever move from Logic and PT, but it's always good to know what's around.

Jules

[EDIT] Sorry, just realized this should probably be in the Computer Music forum. My bad.

its based on Cool Edit Pro (I dont know if you know that one).
CEP lacked a low latency mixer, and professional features in general.
it was more like Magix Music Maker etc... but totally overpriced.

i dont know how audition is, but for me its a bit hard to believed that theyve made "the big step up" to SX,Nuendo,Logic,Samplitude etc....

I find myself doing mainly 3 things in Audition. 1) Time compression/expansion;
2) De-clicking of LPs when I want to burn them to CD; and 3) Removing loud
room tone from files recorded on location. It works really well in those 3 cases,
but I find editing and mixing to be easier in other programs. If you need any of the
3 above tasks done, I would recommend the program.

I've used it for all applications before...including recording/mixing. Seemed to be a great tool and easy to use. It's well less than $300, and they sell it to students now (on those type of discount sites) for $129. For the money, I think it's an excellent value.

Thanks guys.

Fruity Loops I have heard of but never used. I didn't realize this was basically a taking-over and rebranding exercise. Still I might check it out. The interface looks refreshingly modern, and it sounds like it might be good as an editer/mastering tool, even if it doesn't have all the nuts and bolts of a full blown mix/arrangement environment.

Thanks again for the views and explanations.

World's best software for radio work, hands down. Awesome program, not really improved at all since Adobe bought it and renamed it Audition but still great.

Ah, I slightly disagree there... One of the biggest improvements that was made to it was adding VST capability to it. Makes it a lot easier to find all the plugs you need when mixing.

It is my audio editor of choice (or actually the older version, CEP 2.1 is, since I haven't updated yet). It does a great job with anything from sample precision editing to CD track lists and metadata. Highly recommended.

Personally I favour it infinitely over Wavelab, although I'm a Cubase user.
