Garage conversion questions

well, after researching this for a few months i think i'm ready to convert my garage into the studio. But i'm wondering about a couple of things.

First, after finding my "Golden section" for my room, it seems to really make my room small. I went from a 22'x18'x 8.8 to 19'x13.5x7.2. Those aren't the exact numbers but you get the idea.
My question is, after looking at everybodies studios on the "project studio" thread,
there's no way that most used a "Golden section", and i'm starting to wonder if i really need to be concerned with it.

Also, i'm wondering on the walls i'm building, do i want to ramset the bottom plates to the slab, or just glue it?

thanks,

michael

1. could you please tell me what is this 'golden section'? i dunno, but i think left/right symmetry is important...

2. check into the forums at www.johnlsayers.com, some of 'em are dedicated to the cause. Also check ethan winer's site and www.realtraps.com for info on treating your own space.

3. a lot of things depend on the type of music, intended audience, your personal preferences, seating, monitoring levels, noise levels in the current space, neighbours, highways, clients requirements and a million other things... maybe more specific help will come your way. A pic of the space and your gearlist will certainly help

good luck,
self.

hey thanks for the response.

The "golden section" is taken from Bob Dennis and others. Here's Bob's link.
http://www.alexandermagazine.com/rec...q0604/room.asp

I've researched and learned a lot from John Sayers site and Ethans, i was just seeing those great pictures of everybody elses studio on this thread
http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php3?t=20730, and wondering if everyone is going for that "golden section" ratio that these people talk about?

Some of those studios in the pictures look like they are in a 2 car garage like mine, but it looks like they're using the whole space. Where as i will need to put up a wall to make my dimensions.

Not a big deal, just last minute nerves before i start slamming walls together. I want to make sure i'm utilizing my space to the best of it's dimensions.

i appreciate any thoughts from those in the know,

oh, and the other question was, can i ramset (slam nails) into the concrete slab on the bass board to hold the walls down? I figure you can, but never came across that info in my research. Just thinking, metal going into the slab may act as a conduit for sound to other parts of the house. Not sure though, anybody?

thanks again guys,

michael

Michael, are you in a house or attatched home? I'm in the same position as you, two car that I' turning into a mix room- no live room. but I noticed a "do not drill" into the slab stamp the other day.... I'm not going to "button up " the room, my walls will really be more like partitions- but anyhow, do you have a sketch of what your planning to do? Maybe we can kibbbitz a little better if we could look at what your doing, and if you tell us what you need to get accomplished in the room.

that being said, I think doing the ramset should be fine.

Hi Craig, good friend of Larry Dents here. In fact i was trying to hire you to play on my last project, but you were busy. I had Daryl Johnson play bass on some of it, and Larry did an incredible job playing. In fact, i was at the old studio in Oceanside before it moved. That was a nice room.... small world.

Anyway, yha, the garage is attached to the house, and i don't have sketches yet, or know how to do that, but probably need to figure that out.

I think that's the delimma i'm facing. A "mix" room or a "live" room, and maybe can't have both. Definitely more of a mix room, but also want to have enough room so i could stick a band in there to rehearse or record.
I like the partion idea. Easier to take out when you want to convert back, if you did.

Thanks Craig,

michael
