Best mics for recording several instruments.

Hi guys,

If you would have unlimited budget, what mic would you use for:

- Drums:Kick, toms, snare, cymbals, overheads?
- Accoustic guitar
- Electric guitar
- Violins
- Brass?

Let's not discuss about compressors / Mic pres, let's stick with mic only.

Thx. Regards
Lawrence.

Hi,

Maybe I was unclear about it but yes, I'm talking about the best mic for each subject individually! So this will result in having MORE mics :-))

bring on that list!
Thx!

Well, I know you want a list of mics for each one, but Go out and get a Royer 121 or 122 and they sound awesome on any of those sources. Maybe throw in a geffell.

On drums for a heavy kick use a D-6 (Audix). For lighter stuff maybe an RE-20 or the new Heil broadcast mic....or even a D112 will work. For the snare an I-5. Overheads Earthworks SR25 matched pair or Josephson c42's. Toms SM57's will do fine. Acoustic an Octava MK012 and a Royer. Electric a Royer R-121 and an SM57. Violins go Earthworks or AT4051. I've never recorded brass.

For drums, either a u87 or a C12.

For acoustic, electric, violins I'd use a U47 tube.

For brass, either a C12 or 421, depending on what it was for.

For piano either a C24, pair of 122's, or pair of C800-G's depending on what it was for.

Or, I'd just take the session to blackbird and use their mic collection.

To stay in a manageable number of mics here are some which should cover all your needs:
U47, U67, 2x KM56, 2x R122 (R122 cause you don't need a pre with 70db) and a bunch of common dynamic mics.

Drums: U47 (with M7 capsule!) in front of the kit (for that expensive 3deeee), R122 for OH, plus dynamic mics as needed

Acoustic Guitar: KM56, U67, R122 and in all possible combinations in-between

E-Guitar: R122, U67 for clean/light crunch, R122 blended with a U67(for that extra bite)

Violins: KM56, R122

Brass: R122, U67

...said that there are tons of other posibilities and other cool mics but I don't wanna write a telephonebook... I thought stay classic plus with a cool pair of ribbons.

good luck

Andreas

Wow cool guys! Thx for all this info. I can do a lot of research and I'll be asking for demo-uses now so I'll try most of them out.

Thanks again guys!

Regards
Lawrence.

i'll take a pair of 4038's, a pair of r84's, and a pair of m-160's. a single r92 and a vintage good condition 44 and that would be the mics i'd bring. i've really become a ribbon devotee and these are my favorites. having a royer or 2 around couldn't hurt
