Ribbon mic

Hi everybody:

I`m looking for a ribbon mic to record electric guitar.

Royer 121 it´s an standard, but it`s expensive for me.

Oktava ML 52 or Beyerdinamic M160 are my options.

Whose your favorite?

Should i save money and buy a Royer?

Opinions?

avoid the Oktava, it's one of their weaker mics.. dark, dull, quiet... bit of a let down.

a lot of good things said about the shiny box mics... i myself lust after the beyers

I'm not familar with the Octava.
The M160 will work on guitar.
However, I personally would save for the Royer. It's excellent on guitars and other applications as well i.e drums, percussion, vocals, brass, piano.
IMO You can't really go wrong with it.

Also, the AEA R92 or perhaps R84 might work for you. They're a little less expensive than the Royer. The R84 has become one of my favorite mics.

SE has a royersque mic out now, I think it's about 8 bills. I have not heard it.
There is the Shiney Box type to, with the TX upgrades

i am loving the aea r84. sounds "big" on electric guitar if you want it to (placement). especially overdriven. takes eq amazingly well. i can really carve away at it and still end up with a musical tone. it just sounds great. and if you have new strings it actually gives a really cool sound on acoustic (not super delicate playing, more like strumming). sort of smooth old school sound on acoustic. but with unobtrusive detail..

Sweetwater has a Beyerdynamic M130 + M160 bundle for $999
i think its a steal. Sometimes you want a figure 8, and sometimes you don't. So in that regard its a very versatile bundle.

i haven't used the Oktava.
but i did buy a pair of ShinyBox 23C's for the cost of one M160 and i am very happy with them. Nice even tone, and it takes EQ very well, but many ribbons do.

whatever you buy,
just make sure you have a nice preamp with plenty of clean gain.

For electric guitar A Royer R-121 is the ultimate mic. It never ceases to amaze me. Pair it with a SM57 or I-5 or anything like that & it's untouchable.

I couldn't agree more. Save your money and get either an R-121, or an R-122. I have an R-121 that I usually pair with an API pre for e. guits and for me the results have been stunning.

Do yourself a favor and listen to everyones Royer recommendations. The 121 is stellar! Both Beyers are really nice, but not as flexible (especially on percussion).

You should get the Beyer 160's and the Royers...
I actually prefer a Coles 4038 more often than the Royers.

GT = Royer for me.

Can't really see myself recording a guitar without one nowadays.

That's just me though...

I have the sE - I actually like it a lot, but it's also my first ribbon. The way I judge is whether or not a mic or instrument makes me want to make music on it and not think of something technical.

Never tried a Royer R121. I have used Beyer M160, AEA R84, and my new favorite on elec guitar the Fostex M88-RP. If you go the Beyer route Full Compass has the cheapest prices I have seen.

I've been having quite a bit of fun wiht the Crowley and Tripp mics. Don't know if I'm going to buy them yet or not... but I have to say they've been pretty interesting.

i just recorded a drum session today using that Royer. it's the best kick sound i've ever gotten. AMAZING!!!!!
i borrowed it from a friend and he got it on ebay for around $900.
spend the extra $ and get the Royer!
p.s.
it also sounds AWSOME on acoustic guitars
