Orange 2x12 or Marshall 1960AV for metal

I'm getting a new guitar cab for recording metal and debating between the Orange 2x12 and the Marshall 1960AV 4x12. My main concerns are having a cab that's easy to mic, and assuring myself a tight bottom end to the tone. (I've been having my low frequencies jump all over the place). The main reason I'm considering the marshall 4x12 is that from my experience 4x12's are generally tighter in the low frequencies than units using fewer speakers. any input?

thanks.

btw my rig otherwise is a mesa rectifier recording pre and a mesa 20/20 poweramp. the rectifier might be part of the reason for my low frequency slop. :/

head over to a guitar forum. They would know more about that. Just for the record though, go with the 1960 cab because I prefer the 4x12". No room for that here, though. Having said that, the actual speaker (celestion, etc) is more important than the cab for close micing IMO. But like I said, ask around.

It's all about the Vintage 30 speaker! I've tested soo many cabs for metal guitars and ended up with a Boogie cab and a Randall cab, both with Vintage 30s.
You really can't go wrong with those.

I'm not too fond of the Rectifiers, because their low end is so sloppy and overblown. I haven't tried the recording pre, but I assume it's in the same league. Also, I wouldn't use the Mesa 20/20 for metal, since it has el84 valves. I'd rather go for a power amp with 6L6's or el34's for a more classic tone, because they usually give you a tighter oomph without farting out. The Orange 2x12 is a very nice and solid cab, but it didn't really like my JCM 800. It sounded great with many other amps, though.

My beloved toy is a Rectifer 1x12" cab. We also have a Rectifier 4x12" here which sounds good but has a lot more loend and less mids. You see, size does matter!

I still prefer the 1x12" for it's tight loend and pleasing mids. (Yes you needs mids for metal! )

I'd choose the Marshall cab for tighter tone but I also agree with earlier post that your amp may be source of looseness. If it's still loose with the 1960 cab I'd say start demoing some other heads for your tone. I can't imagine not getting a tight enough tone with the Marshall cab.

I don't think you'd regret the Marshall even if you find it's your amp.

I just realized that the Orange cabs are also loaded with Vintage 30s. Has anyone used them for recording?

Vintage 30's are great speakers but I don't consider them tight. The GT12-75's are tighter. Less versitile though...

I used to play on a randall cab (vintage 30's) and i remember it hitting pretty hard. If you're using a 20/20, though, you may want to go with the orange. Since its not the power of a full out head, you may want to push it through the 2x12. Just a thought. Plus, Orange just looks way cooler than a marshall.

yeah the GT12-75's are the tightest speakers I've played through. hence the 1960a really blew me away when it came to bottom end...but other than the LF those speakers sound kind of harsh to my ears. so I suspect they would be difficult to mic? you had any experience micing those?

I have a Demeter iso box with a vintage 30. super tight up front guitar sound. Plus it doesn't wake the neighbors and its great for live tracking with minimal leakage.

Orange cabs have vintage 30's .

I've got an AD30 and orange 4x12 cab . The cab sounds amazing ! Highly recomend it ! Best guitar rig I've ever owned .

Plenty of low end and Mid range . the Cab Weighs a millon pounds though , very hard to move . I hurt my back moving it up stairs once .

I haven't tried the 2x12 , but for recording you don't need too be that loud so the smaller 2x12 cab should be fine .

Buy the Orange 2x12 and try it out , if you don't like it sell it . Orange gear holds it value , and is popular right now .
