'...more convenient to watch films.'

Uh-huh.

What really gets me about this, though, is that there will soon be tons and tons of worthless plastic discs in the landfills. This 'Greendisk' company plan to recycle them isn't going to work - lots of cities still don't have recycling for plastic or glass, why would they have recycling for DVDs? And if the user is expected to send them in (at their own expense, mostly likely), that will just NEVER happen.

Just what we need. tutt

Why couldn't the package include an SASE postage prepaid so you can return the disc once it's done? They could probably work into the packaging. I buy cheap DVD's all the time, paid $10 for Total Recall about two weeks ago and Tape Heads for $6 on Friday. I'd rather do that then get something that will expire in 48 hours.

And guaranteed, someone will figure out a way around their copy protection, so you can just copy it with a DVD burner before it dies, rendering the whole thing pointless from a "lets stamp out piracy" viewpoint.

More disposable crap! I don't think we need it and I don't think the recycling will work.

so what would keep you from buying one of these "self destructing" DVD's and then coating it with a clear laquer to keep the oxidisation from occuring?

The lacquer would most likely not be optically correct and would interfere with the focusing of the laser. The added mass could also screw with the balance of the disk, causing wobble & rotational speed variations that would and mondo jitter. On the other hand, if the disk is going to fry anyway, it wouldn't hurt to try.

I think this "self-destruct" idea is just laughable....

What we really need are entertainment company executives that self destruct!
