Damn, I'm jealous. Although if I owned all those I might not get too much work done - would be too busy admiring my mics!

They're original silver 414EBs.....the first 414s came with the same brass C-12 capsule thats in the C-12 Tube mic...It wasnt till the black 414EB-P48 that they changed to the inferior PVC capsule. Although I think some of the silver ones that were made right before the P-48 version came out had the PVC cap as well but I could be mistaken....
I also have a TLII and its a joke compared to the old ones. I really dont ever use it anymore, but its so hard to bring myself to sell my BABYS!! (even though that ones kind of the ugly red headed step child of the bunch)

Didn't they also re-issue some silver 414's recently?

I have a Pair of Microtech MT71.1's that I use mainly and sometimes a Milab XY-82 stereo mic. I also have a setero pair of Studio Projects C3's and they also sound very good on overheds(but I like em better out in the room better)

However I have a slight delema, In addition to the above I have a Single KM84 and a single 414 B-uls. Should I

1. look for another secondhand KM84 (will they be the same is the problem)

2. Sell the KM84 and buy 2 new KM184's.

3. get another 414 (again will they be the same) Ive had the 414 for 12 years.

4. keep the 2 singles and get a pair of the new 451's

All of the above execpt selling the km84.

ah yes thats it, wasnt so hard after all.

Yes, they're silver, but from what I understand they are the same thing that's in the modern black and gold models. It would take quite a few modifications to get the modern 414 (B-ULS or TLII) back to it's former sonic glory.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the new 414's. They have an icky high end. I don't know about the old ones though.

SM81's

I like my SM81's because they are so versatile, drum overheads, acoustic guitar, piano, horns, strings. If you have a budget they are terrific bang for your buck.

I like AKG C451B's for overhead duty, but I have taken an about face and for the last while I have been using Sahiaman's Little Blondies. They really do a nice job of capturing the whole kit.

For a open clear sound, Earthworks QTC really rocks. I really like how they capture transients on cymbals. Here's a clip with QTC40.

Shure sm81s and AKG C451s are both pretty acceptable, but I rather like LDC's as overheads. Recently used a pair of Rode NTK's plugged into some rack mounted vintage Neve 1064 preamps. Recorded in a big spacious hall they produced a very tasty overhead sound indeed ( on vintage Ludwig and Gretsch kits).
Rode K2s work well too.
