Thread Starter | Focal SM9 ! Focal Launches Flagship SM9 Monitoring System At AES
San Francisco, CA (November 5, 2010)--At AES, Focal Professional is launching its new SM9 flagship monitor, which sports independent monitoring systems housed within the same cabinet.
The SM9 includes:
• A three-way monitor equipped with a one-inch pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter, a six-and-a-half-inch midrange driver, eight-inch bass driver and an 11-inch passive radiator. All the drivers are made of the Focal exclusive "W" sandwich technology. This monitor reportedly delivers a frequency response of 30 Hz-40 kHz (+/-3 dB) at a maximum SPL of 116 dB.
• A two-way monitor equipped with a one-inch pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter and a six-and-a-half-inch "W" cone mid-bass driver. This monitor is said to have a frequency response of 90 Hz-20 kHz (+/-3 dB), allowing it to verify mixes on a bass-limited speaker such as televisions, computer systems, car systems, iPod speakers and other multimedia systems.
The concept behind the sealed cabinet two-way monitor is to allow the engineer to precisely adjust levels and EQ in this critical range. The activation of the two-way monitoring mode is achieved by engaging the FOCUS mode on the side panel.
The company says that the pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter has been improved, its linearity and ability to reveal micro-information due to a new magnet structure that reportedly achieves 2.1 Tesla of magnetic flux. This has an effect on the tweeter's ability to reproduce micro-dynamics, which helps the engineer to dial-in compression and reverb.

Sick! Now I'm excited! It looks like there'll be some lit up shootout threads coming up with these in play. Calendar marked, accountant contacted...

These were great and even without a sub. they told me they haven't finished development on the sub yet. These are clearly the BOMB if you can afford them.

Very interesting. A couple questions:
1. On the website it describes some rather extensive on board equalization control. Are these controls on the back if the units or are they software controlled like the SM11?
2. Are said eqs analog or digital?
3. If digital, which filter technology is used --- similar to DXEQ?
Thanks

great idea btw! i hope the option of switching the LF in and out can be done via foot switch, like I do with my NHTs.

Do you have new speaker designer development engineers? I likeyourhi-fi range, while the studiorange was always not my taste (which is a personal thing). The eq in the sm8 (which are discontinued) was not very transparent.

The EQ section can be hard bypassed with a relays with on press on a button for even more audiophile reproduction.
The SM9 uses very sophisticated preamps, all capacitor less and DC coupled. Together with audiophile DC coupled (no capacitors in signal-flow) discrete high bias Class A/B amplification, and must be heard to believe it.
With kind regards,
Bas

They can be turned into two different sets of speakers..
The Mid range and tweeter - become another pair
Quite clever!
