I just finished a project there a few weeks ago. It's a great place. It is built in an old church. The rooms sound good, and the staff is really great. The hall is quite the place to do orchestral recordings. I got to sit in the room for a few minutes and listen to a Bond cue rehearsal. I've mostly worked in the mix room, but I did some recording in other room -- the one with the 8078. i even got to meet Sir George when i was there last year. Quite a thrill...

It's now owned by the same person that owns Strong Room, but I did not notice any change at all compared to last year when i was there.

John

Ahhh Air!

This is my local studio, being born, raised and still living in Hampstead.

I remember when the building was just a shell and for many years when I was a child, it looked like it would be pulled down. Interestingly there is another building almost identical (and very much in need of repair) over the road (backing on to London biggest hospital) which I have my eye on for when I win the lottery.

The main hall room is one of the finest classical spaces in the world.

Great engineers and a fantastic selection of equipment make it a truly world class studio.

when i think of george martin i think of abbey road. who cares where the hell harry potter was recorded. buy 'recording the beatles' book and check out the gear at that place. truely the best combination of gear and musicianship that has ever happened period.

If you really think that Abbey Road was about great gear, I would highly recommend Geoff Emerick's book to you. While all of the gear at AR has now achieved iconic status, practically down to the patch bays and connectors, Emerick's book shows the struggles that they had, and the creative processes that they went through to overcome them, as well as the incredibly high and often contradictory standards that were set by Emerick, Martin and the Beatles themselves.

I don't think that the Beatles would have objected to working at Lyndhurst. Their work may have been even better.

On the other hand, Martin always said that it was not the gear's excellence, but its limitations that forced them to be as creative as they were, and made those records sound the way they did.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing AR. But those who worked there at the time didn't exactly consider it to be Valhalla.

what the Abbey Road rooms have is incredible acoustics.

that they also had better gear than they probably knew at the time, helped.. but the main thing is that thsoe rooms sound amazing.

not that AIR doesn't sound great as well.

I do miss the old Oxford Circus Studio 1 though...

they also have probably 15 or more STC 4038's that don't seem to be on that list.

and the big custom Neve is just that, NOT an 8078.. but an all custom desk with different frequencies on the eq's and remote mic pres in a split design so that the left side can be assigned to either the monitor or mix path.

Gear Schmear, Its all about the Ear...........

The Beatles could have recorded on a 4 track and( oh they did) with cambell soup cans and strings for headphones, costco guitars, crate amps and an autoharp and would have still been the greatest band of all time, with the coolest producer of all time. One thing people forget when chasing gear and drooling is that Ear wins over gear all day long and then some. Harry potter sounds great but is it as cool as Live and Let Die? Ah the good ole days, some dude pushed record and the band played, finished, went out, got drunk, laid and came back to the studio the next day and had a record waiting for them. Just my ears complaining about analog deprivation.....BT

In the words of the immortal (or so he should be!) Alan Partridge of BBC fame, when asked by a young ignoramus "Who were Wings?"

"They were only the band the Beatles could have been..!!"

Alan Partridge is a great character created by comedian Steve Coogan. Check him out if you like that extremely un-easy English embarrasing kinda thing that The Office does so painfully well... Without John Cleese no Partridge - and equally without Alan Partridge no David Brent.

Speaking of english comedy......

There was once a very funny sketch (I forget on which show) which had George Martin as a hostage in Lebanon or the like. After spending 4 years chained to a heater his fellow captive tries to strangle him when he hears once more

"I remember telling Paul and John ..." etc.

I cannot think of George without the phrase "marvellous"

A true English gentleman.Old school.
