Those seem to be less than 1/2 the cost of their other models. I wonder why?

Crowley & Tripp

If I remember correctly, I had a conversation with Mr. Tripp about it at the AES show in NY, and he told me that the machining work on the more expensive mics is all done by hand with a lot of attention paid to detail. For the naked eye the outer shell of the mic is done with some sort of special lacquer, but that the actual ribbon assembly of the mic is the same as the more expensive models.

Maybe Chris would care to comment more about the Naked Eye.

Right now I am trying out the Proscenium and I LOVE IT, it is such a well balanced mic that the only thing I can equate it with would be a DPA 4003 or a Schoeps CMC6, if one may make such comparisons. I think these mics are the DPAs of Ribbon microphones.

Peace
Marco

Hi Marco.

I'm not surprised you like the Proscenium. It sounds great on everything. Does Millennia have a "passive input" option? I believe it gets rid of the DC blocking capacitor in the signal path. The DACS Micamp has this too.

Millennia with Ribbons

Hi Jason,

Yes the Millennia HV-3 comes with the optional passive input option. I had to have mine installed. The Proscenium sounds great through the Millennia but I am also keen to try it with other preamps.

Since most of us are accostumed to expect a specific vibe from ribbon microphones, somehow some people have overlooked the fact that this mic performs so well in all registers. The Proscenium is right up there with the very top ribbon microphones.

Peace
Marco

Sorry for the late response... been busy here at the lab...

Hugh Tripp has been in charge of scaling up production for Naked Eye and that is the biggest reason that the mic can be offered at a lower price- as you know, larger quantities mean price breaks on parts, and in turn lower prices.

The ribbon is the same, though the way this mic is designed and tuned here at the lab is substantially different than its bigger brothers. Bob and Hugh are satisfied with the results and have accelerated the final field trials and production schedule.

Well I've got a demo unit on order and I can't wait to clap my ears on it.

Naked Eye Now Shipping

Ashland, MA February 23, 2006. Naked Eye, a new, dual-voiced ribbon microphone made by American microphone manufacturer Crowley and Tripp, has been released for domestic and international distribution, the company announced today. “Our manufacturing group accelerated the release of this new product after field trials showed the demand for a dual-voiced ribbon microphone” remarked Crowley and Tripp’s Product Manager, Chris Regan. “Customers told us they wanted to have both a mellow, traditional ribbon sound, and yet also be able to record smooth, but articulate, vocals” he said. “The core voicing technology, which is unique to the Crowley and Tripp product line, makes this possible at an affordable price.”

Co-founder Hugh Tripp provided a tour of the new model, dubbed “Naked Eye” because the microphone is designed to be open to incoming sound, without excess layers of cloth or sound blocking protection, yet very rugged. “The A and B side sounds are patterned after our two most popular professional models, the Proscenium, and the Studio Vocalist.” Tripp commented. “And by scaling up production and using the techniques we learned from precision device manufacturing over the years, we are able to control costs, yet keep the performance very high.”

The new microphone comes in a fitted wood storage case complete with a unique rotary microphone mount designed to be versatile, and have low diffraction effects. Naked Eye carries a three-year warranty and sells for $745 in the U.S. “We’re delighted with the positive response to our products in our first full year of general production. And we’re thankful to our customers who have spent their time working with us, and teaching us about applications, their music, and how we can help them fulfill their artistic vision” stated inventor and CEO Bob Crowley, who started the firm.

Crowley and Tripp Microphones are hand made in the US at the company’s Ashland, Massachusetts labs by people who know the art and science of acoustics, and who have years of experience with high output, low noise instruments used in medical and professional audio applications. Models include the Studio Vocalist, Soundstage Image, Proscenium, SPLx Custom and Naked Eye. For more information visit www.soundwaveresearch.com.
