can a machine really do this?

I am trying to construct a project studio which gets songs tracked then mixed quickly and intuitively. The problem is I use hardware sample/drum machines which results in many analog outputs.

eqpt:

iMac i7 (1 FW 800, 4 usb 2.0)
Cubase 5

Mpc 2000 (8 analog out)
Emu sp1200 (8 analog out)
Emu Mp7 (4 analog out)

budget: $2000 +/-

I want to track into Cubase all in one take so up to 20 analog ins (could make due with 16) then once tracked I want to mix the song using automation with motorized faders.

I've considered many possibilities from audio interfaces daisy chained since i cant find something like a motu 24io with just FW (needs PCI), then adding a control surface... to digital mixers that have audio interface and control surface combined that track directly to cubase then have motorized faders to automate (nice all in one solution).

I've looked at Yamaha 01v96 & Tascam dm 24 with FW expansion and many others but just feel I have not found the solution.

Any recomendations greatly appreciated

Here's a solution for getting 24 analogue inputs via firewire: Alesis HD24 + Profire Lightbridge.

The HD24 is known mostly as a standalone hard disk recorder but it can also transfer all 24 channels in real-time via it's digital outputs.

You would simply connect your samplers, drum machines etc into the HD24's analogue inputs and send the digital outs into the Lightbridge which plugs into your computer's firewire socket. This will allow you to track up to 24 channels into Cubase.

Not sure what the prices are like in the US but if you buy used it should leave you with enough left over to add a control surface.
