Cee lo's "Lady Killer"

Does anyone have any recording info on this record? I'm really impressed with some of the new 'soul/hip hop' coming out in the last couple of years. I have always felt that the 60's and 70's were the golden era for soul, and that the 80's and 90's really got into some pretty sterile territory. Its nice to hear artists like Cee lo and Raphael Saadiq making music that takes lots of 'vintage' elements but makes modern, contemporary music. I guess a nod to the Roots as well, though for my money these guys have taken it further.
In any case, on the new single 'F**k you' i really like the sounds of the guitar, piano, vocals, etc. Hard to tell if they are using samples on anything.
Any info would be spectacular!
Thanks
Ian

Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings..

The Budos Band

Kings Go Forth

Eli Paperboy Reed

are much better than cee-lo or the roots.. and they have that vibe in spades. Cee lo is pop.

So the OP poster askes, "Does anyone have any recording info on this record?" and once AGAIN a value judgement (however valid it might be) is assigned

I may very well agree with you, but can we PLEASE stay on topic? THIS board does not HAVE to be about judging one artists AGAINST another.

I like many of the people you are talking about, we are probably closer in opinion than you think. I was working on a musicology degree before i dropped out to play music, sharing stages with many of the blues and soul greats before they passed. I have a deep appreciation for "non pop" takes on the music. That is exactly what i like about this 'new wave' of artists. I think they are 'pop', but they are stylistically doing things that pass through many of my mental gauntlets to deliver something that appeals to my aesthetic, while making music that people who just want to groove can appreciate too.
I grew up in the Antone's(austin blues) world so aspects of the Dap Kings seem a little too culturally 'fascist' in their approach. I know it serves a purpose and they are awesome in what they do. I like seeing music that is alive, like going back to '67 to feel what it sounded like when it was the music of "now". I feel that with Cee lo. He feels pop to me the way the Temptations might have when they hit. And Raphael Sadiiq. come on, his last record is deep, and seemingly without trying..
so, any recording knowledge? Digging the clean guitar sound on the single, almost like Jackson 5 clean, doesn't sound super compressed though. Piano?

I don't have any info an gear, but I'm sure it was co-written with Bruno Mars & Phillip Lawrence (who, as a songwriting/production team, call themselves the Smeezingtons)

Found this Interview

Those are pretty well known if you are into that scene (ie Jam Bands).

Producer/Engineer Graham Marsh has worked on tracking the majority of the new record. Producer Ben Allen also has a track on there that is killer! Lots of live instrumentation mixed with drum samples. Great album...you're gonna love it.
