getting that mid-boost on guitars - how to?

hey folks

I'm trying to get this type of metal sound (hear the clip below, "metalexample").

I checked it out in detail and re-created a listening example (I re-recorded the song snippet, so: "metalexample" is the sound I'd like to achieve, "metal remake" is the track I re-recorded):

SoundClick artist: gitarrero - page with MP3 music downloads

in my ears "metalexample" sounds kind of "cleaner", more defined/transparent re. the guitars. the guitars are way more defined in the midrange.

what can I do to get it better?

here's how I recorded it:
- Axe FX
- PRS mike mushok bariton guitar
- pushed some mid's on "equiem" EQ (vst)

I may add: I'm working with cubase, so any solution that works with VST would be great.

I welcome all feedback - e.g. if you think a particular eq could bring in those mids, and/or you thing something else in my setup needs to be changed.

I'm looking forward to your thoughts - thanks in advance,

martin

how about a tubescreamer as boost(gain near zero, level at max and tone as you like)? i know it's the most used trick in the world but give it a try.

I could not listen to your clip, but on the Axe-Fx, you can use the MASTER parameter in the AMP block to nicely control the amount of midrange bark you want to have in your tone. Choosing a different tone stack changes the character as well.
