Thread Starter | Odd guitar / instruments into guitar amp question
First post here, please be gentle This is more a "live" question than for studio stuff...In short, I have both an electric guitar and one or two keyboards I'd like to all run through a guitar amp (directly in the amp's input jack, not via the FX loop). Why? Because I tried it and I like the sound of a tube preamp an can get nice distortion sounds on what are usually fairly "clean" sounds produced by my keyboards (and/or I dislike the cheap onboard digital distortions on the keyboards). Also because of the color the speaker adds. Also cause I like the idea that for live stuff I'll just slap a mic in front of my amp and I'm done for the sound guy and I get all my monitoring in one place... The question is, how can I mix all three signals so that I can all run them through my amp, safely and "kosher" from a sound point of view? I won't play all three at once, typically either just guitar or one keyboard. I figure I need some kind of tiny mixer, but can I plug my electric guitar directly in? Will it sacrifice my guitar's tone? Can I damage my guitar amp, other than perhaps potentially sending it frequencies (bass, etc) which it is not necessarily designed to handle? Someone else I asked suggested I put a 40db pad on the keyboards (I figure to reduce the input signal to match that of the guitar?) but didn't explain why (busy tech support dude!). |

yes, you will sacrifice the guitar's tone with the mixer. The solution could be to use DI boxes before the mixer, and one REAMP after the mixer.

If you`re using a guitar amp, I`d try a couple reamps to turn the keyboard`s line out into instrument level, than you could use a guitar A/B/C box, that let`s you connect 3 instruments to be sent to a single amp. Cool, thanks for the ideas. A switch box seems more appropriate as you suggest... Is there a way to avoid a reamping box, perhaps just a pad or something? I don't know much about reamping, but if I remember these boxes are a bit expensive for my budget (say from 50-100$ basically).

I asked the same question elsewhere and somebody suggested a 40 db pad on the keyboards (to bring down signal level) along with a switch. Does that make sense? The switch won't alter the guitar tone?
