Portable Speakers for Mixing, small options?

I'm going to be doing a lot of flying around and going out of the country in the next few months and I want to be able to do some mixing. I need some suggestions for a great pair of speakers that are small enough to throw in a suite case and carry with me to mix. I know headphones are an obvious answer, but I would like to consider the idea of some speakers.

I'm seriously considering a pair of Adam A3x's since I know the A7's pretty well. They are still a tad bulky and would like to hear some suggestions for anything else out there that's smaller and/or lighter...

I saw a pair of Tascam VL-M3's when I went to listen to the A3x's today, they were TINY! Something that size would be great, but I know I can't expect too much from something that size.

The smaller they get the more difficult it is for you to find a useful reference tool. But if you're interested I can recommend the KRK vxt4. I own a pair. I use them for traveling about and having a reference set of nearfields. They're good. For the money they are excellent. They have a good balance of low, mid and highs, an exceptionally clear midrange. The stereo field is well defined. They don't sound boxy. They translate well with a relatively short learning curve and they have plenty output for nearfield work. I like them a lot.

I also like the PMC db1sa. They are excellent. They have a great balance of low, mid and highs. They are exceptionally clear and defined throughout. They have excellent lows for their size and they translate well with a minimal learning curve. They also have plenty of output. They also sound quite tight in the bass frequencies.

Thanks for the suggestions, the avantones look pretty sweet. I have a pair of KRK's and love them, the only issue is they are SO heavy...

I'll also check out the dynaudio's, thanks.

Oh, I should add that they need to be active and NOT passive. Having to carry around and amp is too annoying...

If "light" is what you want, you should strike out M-Audio AV40's from your list. They aren't that bad regarding their size (not as good as my A7X's for sure), small but rather heavy.

A3Xs are great, they do all the things I love about my A7s, but without the extension/power and there is maybe a bit of that whole 'small speaker/upper-bass-hump' thing going on, but it's not all that bad in comparison to other similar-sized speakers I've used (such as the Genelec 8020A).

Portable Speakers for Mixing, small options?

If it were me I'd pack my ns10s and one of those digital amps like a flying mole or something. No idea what that combo would be like though.

I'm seeing some good stuff for the Fostex 6301b. I REALLY want to get the Adam's a3x's but I don't know if I can spend that much right now.... The Fostex's are really cheap and look like they are rugged enough to throw in a suit case and not have to worry about them.

Focal CMS40's are a great monitor (that I own and use in a smallish room) The weight is 11lb/5.5kg per unit; the cabinet is aluminium...it looks pretty tough but I'm not sure about a fall from height.
