Creating a 3rd above octave in the box.

I'm having trouble creating an octave that's a third above. I have the waves pitch shift and sound shift. What's the best way to go about this?

Vocals? Acoustic instrument? Virtual Instrument?

Do you mean 3 octaves above? You don't mean a Third, or an Octave + a Third?

If it's a midi or virtual instrument, transpose your midi data. It will sound a lot better than trying to pitch shift the audio.

If it's an acoustic track, assuming you want to pitch shift it 3 octaves up, just do it. If your pitch shifter only stretches to 1 octave, do it 3 times and render each time. Or I guess three instances of pitch shifter would work, using lots of CPU.

I expect it would sound like ass. Are you looking for some strange metallic harmonic edge? A distortion effect might give you the harmonics you want.

I pray to whatever god that I don't ever hear what you're trying to accomplish. No matter what you're trying to do, it sounds all kinds of wrong.

Either you need to re-think everything, figure out proper terminology, or quit.

An octave plus a third needs additional tracking, or needs to be forgotten.

Call out to Alvin

Hiring a chipmunk to sing the line might sound more natural than trying to pitch shift a human voice that far.

Wrong ? I use +2 octaves on vox quite often, check this out (actually it is recording made on 1 microphone, so double bass, gong and voice is +2 octaves higher). I like the results, but maybe I should quit...

not sure what kind of music you're making, but just moving a melody line up a 3rd in most popular styles of music isn't going to sound good. You'd have to figure out the exact note. Some thirds will need to be 3 half steps, some 4, and sometimes you'll need 5 half steps or some other note completely. At that point, you may as well just figure out a nice harmony part and record it on a separate track.

If you're just asking how to work your particular piece of software, I'm afraid I don't know that Waves plug at all.

If it's asking how many cents you want to shift it up by, it would be 300 cents for a minor third and 400 cents for a major third. I know that's how the Logic pitch shifter works.

What is wrong with GS? Seriously, why does every post have to be such a dramatic test of skill, authenticity, or morality?

The guy wants a harmonizer. If he doesn't know how to work it, he'll either learn or fail.

To fairly cheap plugins.

try melodyne in demo mode- you'll need to do ten second chunks at a time but its got the smoothest algorithm for shifting IMHO

Thank you. A harmonizer is perfect.
