Dropped my Sony C38b!

today at the studio I freaking tugged on the mic cable to plug it in, didn't realize how little slack I had left, and I pulled the darn thing over... and it smashed on the ground from way up high on it's stand.

It's broken now, not to mention my other Sony C 38b decided to stop working today... it's always been a tad more finicky, but it wont even give me a signal either now...

THERE GOES MY 2 MOST USED LDC's, and overall most used mics!

I'm so upset right now!

Yep, I'd rather drop a guitar. I've dropped both and wrecked several, but have more nightmares when trashing a perfectly restored vintage world-class mic.

Hi, have you thought sending them both to be repaired?

It's not unlikely that the pieces that are broken in one c38 will be ok in the other one. So you could end up having one C38 made from the functioning pieces of the pair.

It's a long shot, but if it helps that woudl be cool

Sad.

I'm not sure where you should send them: Sony professional has a repair dep't, and since that particular mic is currently re-issued, I would expect parts to be readily available, and the service dep't to accurately restore it. Here's their contact info:

Sony | Services and Programs

Otherwise, you'd prolly be waiting a LONG time for someone like Tony Merrill @ Steven Paul Audio, or Klaus Heyne IF he happens to work on the Sony's.

Those are def. sleeper mics - I have a pr of the orig. issues, and they are so great for a variety of instruments - real workhorses. I feel your pain...

Ouch !!!

Rene. Sharing a bit of your pain here. Love Sony C37's and C38's. But to lose both .. They need some TLC. Hope it all goes well for you.

About a year ago I called Sony and asked if it would be possible for them to send me a part, socket adaptors, that allow you to mount the C38s on a standard stand, what the guy said killed me...

"I see the part, I'm looking at it right now, but there's no number on it so I can't sell it to you"

I was like , so I instead used the right size of copper fittings screwed in there to compensate, work quite well actually...

Anyway, the point is, I don't think they want to do work on the older ones, not just from what he said, but I think I heard somewhere about the time I was looking for those replacement sockets that they won't work on them... It's a pain because if this is so, there should be no excuse, the new C38's and old ones must be interchangeable.

But hey, I might just call them up...

PS. Can someone let me know some names of people who fix condenser mics? I'd like to at least see if someone will work on them, and I'm new to the "sending off a mic you just dropped" game... haha... boo hoo...

I'll vouch for Peter Drefahl for service/repair. He's fast, and great to deal with - total expert all the way. The only drag is customs and paperwork/time.

however, I'd also check/post over at PSW on Klaus' forum and see what turns up - maybe there is someone great that we're not familiar with - YET!

Good luck!

I can just imagine that split second when you saw it hit the bricks, not nice. Hope you get it or them back up soon.
