Apogee ad16x with HD card -> pro tools 8 HD|2 rig. question about monitoring

yes i know you cant run monitors from the ad bc its all ins......what we've been using is a 96 i/o to monitor with ns-10s. i'd like to have something dedicated to just monitoring so we can take the 96io out of the equasion. something that will work well and not muck up the apogee sound but not break the bank (if thats even possible hah).

I'd like to have it where all our ins are going through the AD16x and have a seperate monitoring piece...so to end this babble, suggestions on a good box and how i might hook that up the best way?

thanks everyone!

p.s. hope this is in the correct area. if not, mod i apologize!.

Actually - with an AD16x w/ XHD card - you can set it to Advanced Routing - and use the Optical or AES outputs to a more affordable strereo DA soultion, like a Used Apogee Mini DAC perhaps. You can connect an OPtical SPDIF cable between the units, or use AES with a DB25 breakout cable. I'd probably suggest checking out the DANGEROUS DBOX - which is a GREAT unit for this task - with on board DA and Full on Monitor Control - albeit there is also an analog mixer on board.

@adam thanks for the quick response. id read a bit about that advanced routing/mini dac. was interested in that . also had my eye on the dbox for a long while. heard it used with apogee rosetta 800 and focal monitors. deff didn't loose anything i could hear with the dangerous at all.

again thanks, keep them coming but i think ill prob end up saving a few more bucks for the dbox in the end. i do like that extra summing on it as well. i could deff find uses for that.

thanks in advance.
