Terry Date

Hey everyone... Any Terry Date fans out there?

The new deftones dvd has lots of studio shots... Looks like those amazing drum tracks (at least to me) were recorded with some very very standard mics. It helps that Abe the drummer can hit tight with one beer in in the hand.

So cool on the clips.

Some great studio peaks in the video.

Terry Date rocks. The new stuff he's been doing is pretty cool. It's like he's just having fun with compressors. It's not the typical Waves Limiter smash, it's like a bunch of different flavors working harder then most would dare. I also love the fact that he doesn't mind using reverb and other efx on vocals. I'm so tired to that dry upfront sound.

He's worked with a lot of bands that I enjoy, but something about the top end on his albums is uncomfortable for me to listen to. I always seem to be cutting highs on the old eq when I listen to his stuff.

I dig his taste in bands though.

On the effects, when they actually had sound crew, they relied heavily on the H3000 for the live vocals. The crew said it was the same effects he used on vox in the studio supposedly.

I dig 'Louder than Love' for the songs and the playing, but not for the production.

'Superunknown' I like less on both counts.

Here's to Michael Beinhorn.

Another Terry Date fan here... I also dug the Handsome album he engineered.. some cool songs on it as well.

Recently I've been listening to the lastest "Dredge" CD which he engineered. I really dig his use of compression and "room" sound.

I can't possibly understand why anyone would like a Beinhorn production. Everything I've heard from Beinhorn was seriously subpar. Boring. Flat. No life. He may have his place in time and that's fine. I wouldn't want to take that away from him. But, for me, NOT!!

Not even in the same realm as Date.

I love Date's work with the Deftones. Great stuff.

Funny how tastes vary. Superunkown is one of my favorite rock productions, although I think it could use more bass guitar on most of the tracks. Jason Costa engineered it though. I think he was unhappy with the mix, or so I was told by someone who interned with him.

Terry Dates' work on the new Dredg is nice (although a little much on the snare compression) but Dredg's last album, El Ceilo sounded amazing. Terry Date's so hit and miss for me. His more recent work I'm a fan of (White Pony) but I hate most of his 90s work (Badmotorfinger, Prong, Vulgar Display).

Gotta love Terry Date.
My fav Date quote...paraphrased:

How do you cut vocals?

I just give the uy a 58 in the control room and go....

What about the feedback?

That's the best part.....

For me Terry Date has defined metal, numetal, whatever for a while now. the new Dredg album just rocks. I brought that album along with some Pat metheny and Kruder & Dorfmeister, and a bunch of other stuff, to compare some high end monitors, and the Dredg album sounded so even and translated extremely well on all speakers. So did Pat Metheny's the way up. I love the fact that no matter who he produces, he captures the bands sound and not just his sound. IMHO Of course

The only record I have that he's done is Limp Bizkit's "Chocolate starfish and the hotdog flavored water". I remember thinking that there's usually not that much top end on Andy Wallace's mixes. It may have just been tracked that way. I think that record is smokin', though. Maybe one of my all time favorites.

Louder than Love is awesome. Superunknown is onna my all-time favorites. My only complaint with Superunknown is that I have a hard time recognizing the bass notes. For the first few months of listening to the album on my crappy boombox over a decade ago, I couldn't hear the harmonic progression of the bassline in "Fresh Tendrils." Then, I listened to it in my friends' bassed out car system, it almost became a new song entirely. Still onna the best albums out there, songwriting and performance-wise. Matt Cameron is a BEAST.

WHERE THE HELL IS KIM THAYIL????

Hey LumenStudio! Are you talking about the pics inside the package or is there footage on the DVD? All I see on the DVD side of "B-Sides & Rarities" is videos...no "in the studio" footage. No real extras. Is the stuff you're talking about hidden?

Check out Otep "Sevas Tra".

So huge.

Terry Date's modern stuff is so awesome. He's probably a big reason why the Deftones are one of my favorite bands.

I felt sorry for him listening to the new Korn record...how do you mix a song when there is no song to mix?

Terry Date rules. His Pantera stuff (Far Beyond Driven!) is insane. And yeah that OTEP record is wicked sounding if ridiculous.

But Superunknown was recorded by Jason Corsaro & Adam Kasper, mixed by Brendan O'brien, and produced by Michael Beinhorn.

Date did however produce Badmotorfinger which is one badass SG record.

The kick sounds on that last deftones record is pretty amazing. It has a lot of size and width without being undefined. I was a fan of his work since Badmotorfinger.

I also think he defined metal in the 90's. He's done some amazing sounding albums. I like the top he gets on some of the Pantera/Deftones mixes. Hurts so good...

I'm with you on the kick thing. Listen to the kick on Limp Bizkit's "Rollin'". I'm surprised my speakers haven't flown out of the cabinets while cranking that one. It seems to me that Terrry has a sound he goes for and makes good choices along the way.
