NHT monitors, specifically the new M-20s

There is a new NHTpro monitor out that replaced the A-20. The new M-20s. I can get a real killer introductory price on these and am really curious about them. I did a search and read up on the A-20 which seemed to get some favourable comments. The M-20 is similar with improvements in the cabinet ect. The power amps come with the speakers (1 for each) and are rack mountable and not attatched to the speaker. Anyone try or happen to hear the new M-20s? I was going to get some Dynaudio BM6a's, but the price offered to me on the M-20s is making me lean towards the NHT's. I have no way to try before I buy just so you know.

I can't speak for the M-20's but I do have a set of NHT Pro A-10's that are pretty killer. They don't come up very often (I think because of the limited production) but they are highly underrated. If these are truly an improvement over the A-10's big brother, I would give them a listen.

I'm a great fan of NHT. Their customer service is fanatstic. I have the MHTPro M-00 and Sub S-00. Couldn't be happier.

If you're buying from NHT, I believe they have a15 or 30 day return policy.

I've owned a set of NHTPro A20s (angled front face units) for over 4 years now and love them. For nearfield monitoring, I think they're pretty hard to beat. Surprisingly good low end and terific imaging IMO. Why they are not discussed or recommended more by Gearslutzs surprises me. Also, I've found NHT's service to be exemplary. Well worth considering. Cheers.

I've used both the A-20's and the A-10's in the past and I thought they were great. If you do end up trying the M-20's let us know what you think!

NHT

I'm also surprised that NHT speakers are not mentioned more on this site. I think these are some of the best sounding speakers on the planet. I've had mine for over ten years now and they are extremely accurate, warm and smooth across the whole spectrum. As far as the specific series your asking about I have not personally listened to them but as far as NHT as a company, they're gr8! For the longest time the San Francisco Philharmonic was doing all of it's mixing with NHT speakers. I'm not sure if they still use them now or not.

I've got 3 sets of A-10s, an NHTPro sub and 2 passive volume controls (PVCs) (2 sets and the sub in studios and one set in my daughter's room - I'm indulgent). As others have mentioned - great NF monitors. When I had a problem with one set, I e-mailed and got immediate customer service from NHT. Turned out that I didn't ultimately need the assistance, but the response was immediate and helpful.

I think they make great products and are a very responsive company. thumbsup

Cool. Nothing but positive feedback on NHT so far. I might just go for it and be a guinnea pig for the new M-20s. The only monitors I use right now are some Yorkville YSM-1 pasive monitors which are less than stellar but they work.and I have tried some Mackie HR824 and KRK V8's and was really unimpressed. Thanks for the comments so far guys.

I've been using the NHT A20/C20 system for about a year and really like them a lot. Sound great. Very good midrange especially, but the bass response is quite good for a small speaker too. I do not find myself guessing how to balance the bass (or anything else), which I did on many other smaller (and some bigger) speakers. I've found they translate very well.

I've had no need to contact NHT since buying the system, but based on my experience with sales (and what I have heard from other users), I'd expect them to be very accomodating and helpful.

I recently tried a setup with NHT M00 and S00 - but they were absolutely not for me. Much to strong in the upper mid and therefore not natural sounding at all. Somewhat like NS10... They are good monitors otherwise, but I could never be happy using them... The sub is quite good, so I could use it for other small speakers though.
These are the only NHT's I've tried so far, so I don't know anything about the more expensive models...

I've been using the A-20's for about four years and couldn't be more thrilled. The A-20's have very impressive imaging and little guess work on what is coming out of them. They've been through some changes over the years as far as the company, but have always been great on the sevice. Don't know anything about the M-20's, but if they are anywhere near as good as the A's then you should check them out. Let us know the outcome.

Re: A20's

I've used my A20's for around 3 years and I absolutely love them. Sold my Genelecs one month after buying the NHT Pro's. Their customer service is absolutely astounding. Don Bassey is hard to beat anywhere. I had a small intermittent wiring problem on one channel of the power amp early on, they sent me a new unit immediately at no charge and just asked me to ship the faulty unit back at my convenience.
I spoke to Don last week and he tells me that the M20 and the A20 share the same drivers, just the cabinet shapes are different and they have also gone to separate poweramps now instaed of the combined unit.

Just curious, but how good a deal is being offered on the M20's right now?

They list at $1000 per speaker/amp, but street price is probably lower. I am trying to decide between the NHT's or PMC TB2 active monitors.

I've been using the A-20's and the M-00/S-00 setup for quite a few years and I'm still loving the results. I bought a spare set of A-20's just in case something happens to the main set! One of those 'little secrets' that is finally starting to get out...

I think they are only available direct in N America.

Cheers,
John

Interesting to hear so many people are using NHT's. I pretty much thought I was in a VERy exclusive secret club. Appears, luckily that that is indeed not the case.

I would love to see great things for NHT. I can't say enough about the A-10's and I compared them to a LOT before deciding to keep them. They have been the biggest improvement I've made in my mixes in years.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned that the whole product line of NHT is based on a closed cabinet design.
This is a good thing IMHO as you do get a superb stereo image, and incredible detailing, unlike ported cabinets where there is some smearing and resonance to contend with.

If you have invested in some great convertors, you will hear them in all their glory.

Please try any speakers at your own studio , and preferably in a direct A/B situation with a rival pair of a similar.

As you are going to hopefully use them for quite a while, it is worth the hassle to get the best you can afford.

I had similar results recently. I thought the M-00/S-00 was interesting, but not monitors that I could use as my primary set. I think they might be great "extra/second check" monitors.

AND

As stated in another thread, Don Bassey is great. He's knowledgeable, honest and genuinely nice.

Only complaint about the A20s is that they get a bit pinched when trying to put out more than 100dB. Not that I mix continuously at 120dB or anything, but for those times you want loud they get a little upset. Otherwise, they're nice studio monitors.

The fact is you can't push a closed speaker too far.
The air trapped behind which gives it a "punchy" sound.
It helps the braking of the speaker on both ends of its travel.

At a certain displacement the air becomes much harder to compress and the sound is compromised.

At a reasonable volume it works very well, push it too hard and you'll hear it.

Bass-reflex overshoot more easily, and they have their own limits as well.

My personal thoughts is the reason NHT's don't get more kudos is because they are very unforgiving. Even some "reference" CD's sound like poop on them. It is this very reason that makes me like them however. If I can get a mix to sound nice on them, it will translate to ANYTHING!

However, I wouldn't much want them anywhere near my home listening environment.

That 's funny, I once brought them home and my wive loved them.

We re-listened to all the favourites, and heard things we hadn't, like the lyrics in some cases and little hidden percussions, we loved it. Until 3am and I had to work the next day.

Great music well mixed sounded glorious. The bad stuff got taken off very quick.

Try it, you might be denying yourself a real treat.

I use an older set of NHT 1.3A's at home for playback, the are in the same type of enclosure as the A 20's just not self powered. It was these speakers that prompted me to buy the A 20's when they came out. So I mix on the A 20's and take stuff home to listen on the 1.3A's.

I bet your mixs "translate" well at home.

Just a bit jealous.

I took the A-20 back into the studio.

We're back to the super "HI-fi".

Where the mixs translate very well but it isn't as clear as the NHTs.

I have 3 pairs of A-10s. Two sets are in studios and one set is in my daughter's bed room. Paired them up with an Adcom preamp and I think they sound great there -- but you do hear everything.

I have used the A-20's for about 4 years now. Switching from NS-10's.

More low end and high end. They translate well and are easy to listen too for long periods.

I have dealt with customer service twice and I was amazed both times. I talked to a real person who knew what they were talking about and took care of my issue right away.
