Who has another job besides engineering?

I'm wondering what all slutz that have jobs besides recording engineering, are actually doing. Does everyone here have a degree in recording engineering, electrical engineering, or are there biochemists among us that fell in love with the true art of recording, mixing and mastering?
How much of your 'working' time per day do you spend with engineering? 10%, 50%, 100%?

For starters, I spend about 50% of my 'active' time engineering. I have not yet the luxury to do this for the full 100%. The other half I work as a financial manager for a food company.
I have studied recording engineering at the LA Recording Workshop. I have a degree in business and economics. It is (unfortunately) still my economics degree that puts bread on the table.

What about you fellow slutz?

Somewhere I took a wrong turn LOL most of my friends/musicians got RICH in the time that it took me to finish school

So now I'm looking for the riches

(I really wanted to go to school for music) Somewhere in childhood I gave up on the dream of playing multiple instruments. (I screwed UP)

I am a musician in the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and I juggle between that and helping my Producer/Clarinetist wife out at CK recording.

I'm a Worship Pastor on full time staff. Been a musician all my life, recorded at the Hit Factory in the early 70's.

I do small projects for self, friends and family, all of whom are musicians, singers, songwriters.

I work in video post, mainly. That encompasses editing, graphics, audio post, etc at various different times. Music engineering has been freelance or just an avocation. Mostly an avocation.

Producing and Engineering is about 90% for me. The other 10% is made up of performing, running a small record company and teaching a bit with my Home Recording Boot Camp workshops.

I have a degree in Psychology. I use it every day!!!!

I'm the Creative Director and Copywriter at a Radio Station. I also play lead guitar in Backroads

Recording's a side thing, just learning the ropes and paying my dues as I go along. I have a small home studio, it gets me by. I need more studio gear!!! Live gear I have a pretty damn cool collection of.

Full time history professor and director of the University Choir. In my heart, full time producer and pianist.
Working in something else is perfect for me, University's schedule is prety flexible. I tried full time musician/producer but got bored too easily. Now is like seeing my girl everyday but not living with her.

Haven't had a real job in over 20 years.

In the early days I played five nights a week also. No more gigging now.

I need all my energy to make my 75 foot commute from my house to the studio!

I have two teaching degrees in European History and American Literature. I was a teacher for awhile, but left that to do Real Estate. Now I make enough money to buy toys for the studio and record local acts 2- 3 days a week. Much fun!!

Day job = selling gear.

Nights and weekends job = recording in my project studio.

So if I'm not using it I'm talking about it.

It's tough but somebody's got to do it.

I'm a pro ball player right now, but I can feel the end of my career in my aching bones and muscles. When I retire, I plan on expanding my car dealerships throughout Phila, Del, & Jersey...

The truth...
I haven't had a "real" job in about 15+ years.
I used to gig every night possible. In the summers 7-9 gigs a week. It looks like this past summer was the last hurrah. My gigging schedule is 3 a week these days, and I'm cool with that. More time in the new room, selling some drum kits for stujo gear...

Andrew

PS..
I've been married 2 years, and my wife has been on me to get a real job for the past 4 years...!

pimpin' aint easy...

Like my brother War, I too 'pimp' full time.

Sometimes feel like I got the balance wrong.

Like all the time!

Began both games in Australia, now in London. Scenery changes, but the game stays the same. But there is better music to hear and work with in London. Fantastic place, it even snowed today! It is 36 degress centigrade back in my home town today...

sh.

PS. War, the AT4047 you sold me made the trip to Old Blighty, and I love it. Thanks for the service!

Full time in maketing/trade show production with a company I own, like others here it's the only way to afford the toys. Hope to make the transition at some point to 100% music in any combination (engineering, producing, writing, performing). Gonna make it happen!!!!

No real day job on over 10 years here.
60% FOH jobs, 40% recording. Sometimes i don´t get any
live sound jobs - then i have to pay the bills with the
40% from the recording gigs.

Starting my 9th year as an Analog Electrical engineering consultant (need a power supply anyone :-) but my soul has been in this music thing for 38 years with no sign of letting up. Took last year off from EE work to practice, sing, write and record. New website coming to follow that up. 2006 it is 50/50 EE and music (unless I get my Big Break :-).......

The ratio varies from day-to-day and week-to-week, but it's about 1/2 mastering and 1/2 live (theatrical, generally, but a lot of orchestral and band-oriented stuff also which keeps my tracking chops up) sound. Standard workweek - between 80 and 95 hours. And I really need to stop doing that soon. Hoping to hire the wife to do QC, books, shipping and such for Massive...
