Colored Compresser for DAW Tracking/Mixing/"glue" - 1968, Fatso?

I'm looking to pick up my first dedicated quality compressor for use during tracking and mixing/2-buss. I currently have a Langevin DVC with the built in ELOPs, which are very nice on vocals, but makes me feel a bit seasick when used on the mix in all but the most subtle of applications with the kickdrum present. I'd like something with a little more control and that will have some character, complementing the Langevin.

The 1968 looks really solid - the "big" switch seems pretty handy for times where I want a little heavier compression and a big kick drum without interfering too much with other sources in the group. I'm also told it has the sort of sonic imprint that helps fill and smooth out digital tracks. How is it during tracking?

My main attraction to the Fatso is it's obvious claim to help fatten things up down low while smoothing things out up top. Never used a sidechain before - am I right in thinking that, with an external EQ, I could link in a high-passed signal to the compressor to serve a similar function as the Drawmer Big switch? Does the Fatso sidechain work with a mono signal or is there one on each side requiring 2 EQs? (I wish EL would get user manual PDFs up on the site...) I'm willing to give up a little tuning control with the Fatso if the preset compression values are good and it really does help digital signal the way it's billed.

I've considered an MC77 as well as a great tracking/mixing comp but I can only afford one right now, and I'm really looking for something to pull in both areas right now.

when you run a search on the forum, you will find plenty and usefull information on the 1968. latley it has become more noticed, especially for its glue and sound it can add to rock 2 bus, and foremost to the drum bus.
