Thread Starter | beta 52, or something else?
Not shure if im supposed to post this in the lowend forum, or here...so ill try here. I got a beta 52 for christmas. I dont have many mics (2 modded mxl 603s, 2 ecm 8000, 1 akg d190, adk ldc something), but i can borrow alot of mics from my dad if i need to (the usual suspects...sm57, beta 52, 421, e604, re20, etc etc). I usually do this when recording, but lately ive been toying with the idea of being able to record whenever i want, so that i dont have to borrow mics. I like the 52, but its pretty much the only mic ive used for recording kick. I mostly do FOH live sound. So i dont really have a frame of reference. Im thinking of exchanging it for something else, maybe a sennheiser e602. What do u think? What would be more versatile? Is the e602 "better", or just different? Or perhaps you have other suggestions? Ill probably get some sm57s soon to cover more of the general recording needs. Thanks! /Jonas |

| Lives for gear | keep it
the b52 is a standard kick mic now. In live use especially. It's also usefull on horns and bass amps. I'd keep it and move toward some other standard mics. senn 421's are super versatile. 57's beyer 201 dynamic is like a 57 but a bit more zip. I like the audix d6 a lot for kick too, but you have a b52 so.... Audix D4 is a very versatile mic. |

Beta52's are great, I'd keep it! I have a D112 and a Beta52 and for my room the Beta52 is the kick mic. D112 gets floor tom.

Beta 52 is my favorite on BD. I think it sounds better than SM7, SM91, E602 and D112 (in that order).

Keep it! It´s a good kickdrum mic - experiment a little and you´ll find it useful on other instruments as well. |

Thanks! Thats what i thought. I just havent used that many other kickdrum mics before, so i was wondering if theres anything better for the same amount of money. And since i can borrow another beta52 from my dad easily, i was thinking of going with something else. I think ill keep it! btw, What other instruments have you guys liked it on? Then i just have to get some sm57s or beyer m201 etc for general recording. I have the preamps pretty much covered atm, which feels nice. 2 ch 1272 clone, 2ch api 312 clone, 4ch amek mozart clone, and 24ch soundcraft 400b. I just have to finish them all up and mount them in cases. Atm everything is just lying on my workbench unfinished. Then im off to another soundcard..The DSPfactory just doesnt cut it anymore. /J |

i would use a more versatile mic for the kick so you can use it on other sources. the 421 is great because it can give you a killer kick sound that will be different than the b52, or you can put it on tom. then, you can use it for guitar amps, bass amps, whatever. i've even used one as a room mic for an old timey sound. same goes for using the beyer m88, RE20 or sm7, last two make good vocal mics too. love guitars with sm7s
