To hell with 2005, 2006 what are u doing (REAL TALK/REAL Goals)

1. Guys, I'm gonna trim up and get in shape. I dont think I can Jogg 2.5 miles (I'm feeling pathetic) and I was getting there/ back in shape right before hurricane Katrina. I'm gonna lose 30-35 pounds. (NO MORE GOOD Porterhouse STEAKS)
I was losing before the storm but I went the opposite way during evacuation, I put on 15pounds since then.

2. NOT buying much more gear. I got enough sound modules and outboard to get work done. I definately wont go for the Digi upgrade plans. The only gear I might buy (unless I land a shitload of work, then the sky is the limit) is a pair of 1073, some api pre/eq, and a massive passive.

3. Gonna step up my production schedule for less procrastination and more work.
3a Gonna get a website crankin and release some indi projects on my label
3b. Gonna rebuild my properties in New Orleans, Refinance and use the money to get more properties. I may open a commercial studio/spot in Philadelphia.

4. Gonna reorientate myself with Finance books from grad school to stay sharp on company valuation,WACC,Black Sholes model etc...

5. NOT gonna meet some pretty woman and let her deter me from the above things.

7. Will not let a pretty TALL woman pass with out hitting on her (hey I still gotta work in some tail time) Though I will hit clubs a bit less this year

8. Gonna watch less TV (even sports) This is the year for me to get paid and not watch other rich folk earn their money.

9. Gonna devote ALOT more time to music theory and getting a better working knowledge. Will practice on my guitar DAILY. And work on scales on keyboard (just to make my composing chops a bit better. Practicing used to cause me to hear melodies so I gotta get back there)

These are in no particular order but THESE are mine. In addition EVERY DAY I will read some part of Dennis Kimbro's book "what makes the great, GREAT" And, I'll also attend a regular bible study (I like this more than church), donate to the RED CROSS, and the Music cares foundation (they were hella helpful during evacuation)

That's about a year worth of work at least

Very motivating. I am with you. If you open a place in Philly, let me know. I am about an hour away.

I am going to MAKE money this year, and spend time making records better, NOT reading more about gear I cannot afford and the client would not appreciate.

(For any of you that remember a previous thread...I am almost finished with the master bedroom that I put off for four years!)

2006 is on! I have 8 projects and over $20,000 in business booked already. I WILL TRIPLE THIS IN THE NEXT 60 DAYS!

Well if the TWU gets there way maybe working for the MTA is the ticket.

You get $55K a year+health benefits+pension.

Yeah you will be underground all day but working in a recording studio almost feels the same somtimes.

Well, it happened for me in Paris, so who knows.

But I know those day you are original if you can eat anything but pasta AND manage to make music as your day to day job, and that quit anywhere in the world.

Especially if you want to get laid here.

The women here are not easily impressed.

And the hotter ones are even more difficult.

The whole "i'm in the music business" line doesn't hold to much water here.

They want to hear do you have health benefits?

How about Dental insurance?

You got savings?

I just want to keep up the momentum that I have been building in the past few months that my studio has been open.

And get more gear (console, radar, more outboard, more mics) but I think that goes with out saying.

Best luck,

Reed

1. Buy/borrow/acquire some more gear so I can record
2. Get back into college after this forthcoming quarter off
3. Get washington residency so said schooling won't cost me 15k/year in tuition
4. Lose this weight I've tacked on. Heh, at least the weight gain was fun (girlfriend and eating out and rocking)
5. Modify my Vespa a bit. I need to add a a better pipe and gearing on it, need to do further research.
6. Find a better job than current shitty calling job.
7. Modify my current apartment or find the right place to move into w/girlfriend and current roommate. I need to go somewhere where I can at least make some light noise when I want to. Paper thin walls added with me being in a "shit sandwhich" (wedged between, get this, two apartment managers) make this place not-so-good for music-making.

As far as a new place, we had a great lead yesterday, turned in apps/we all have good history and jobs/continual income/no previous strikes against us/great history and the like but were turned down because "they didn't want a house of roommates/pets" (though they didn't list the place as a single-family home and they said pets were ok, damn age discrimination). We'll keep trucking on.

There's more but that's the current list. Overall, '05 was good.

Constantly remind myself of the great quote:

"The handles of a craftsman's tools bespeak an absolute simplicity, the plainest forms affording the greatest range of possibilities for the user's hand.

That which is overdesigned, too highly specific, anticipates outcome; the anticipation of outcome guarantees, if not failure, the absence of grace."
- William Gibson, All Tomorrow's Parties

Keep looking for ways to improve my skills, refine my gear, develop my working style.

I'd like to make a few more bucks, maybe sling a little gear on the side. I'm highly resistant to using my skills as an engineer to make more money. I like working with the bands I like, every day I record is a great day. I'd hate to change that.

I need to get some grass growing in my backyard. Dog tore it up real good.

Overall, I'm pretty happy. Been in business one year on jan 1st, it's been rough here and there, but an adventure none the less.

I should try to get in better shape, too. Getting old, ya know...

I was just at the Salt Mine paying rent, and Don told me they're doing a mix on Christmas day! The client and mixer both requested it.

NYC is kinda tough on that note. Philly is only slightly more laid back on that note.

Goal for 2006? Keep doing what we're doing: Staying involved with the Philly music scene. Recording and promoting local artists. Just one example:

reshape my bizz

Well, I keep thinking that I might beneffit from a better business plan, so:

1. I will make more marketing/advertising efforts. Word of mouth won't rise my incomings anymore. I'll include some deals for big local web-portals, for a better trafic on the studio's website. I'm thinking getting a sales manager, I see that I can not do this by myself anymore - it's either working in the studio, or managing the business.

2. I will get all the paperwork sorted out - moving for indie-type releases. Gotta have all the contracts done well.

3. For now, I have a problem with my ppl here - I have another 4 guyz working, beside me, but none of them is a full-time employee. I will try to settlle this by contract/scouting for other good guyz as well.

4. More advertising jobs - meaning better contacts through the agencies..more beer with those guyz.

5. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING : I will try to invest all savings in real estate projects.

Hmmm...

1. Meeting Tina Dico (http://www.tinadico.com)

2. Getting Married to Tina Dico.

3. Explaining all that to my I'm-swedish-so-I'm-proud-and-independant girlfriend whom I'm sure will understand me. A-hem.

4. Eventually finishing the new Northward studio and getting all the gear that I still have to get (another great Pastas, Bread & Vitamins year!). Already having nightmares about the cabling part.

5. Eventually releasing my band's first album - which we were supposed to release this year. (Yeah, right...)

6. Go back on stage and play some nice gigs.

7. Record good bands & meet amazing musicians & people that make me fell like I'm nothing.

8. Meeting 7ciel and going to NYc with him see some friends. I also have to try that french accent stuff I share with you. C'mon we're Froggies!

Cheers to all and HNY 2006!
