What's your favorite guitar cab?

I have 3 Marshall cabs:
Straight with 75 watt celestions
Straight with 25 watt green back
2X12 with 75's.

Sometimes I demo amps with other cabs and they seem to sound better ala Soldano, Boogie and Bogner. I'm looking for a kick ass recording cab. I have a JCM900, JCM2000 and Soldano Avenger.

I know you're into the hard rock and all, but for a different sound, look at a Tone Tubby cab with their speakers... best speakers I've ever heard IMO... www.tonetubby.com

Later.

Hey James...

I asked about 2x12s over at thegearpage.net

They rave about scumbag cabs a lot over there, and Bogner oversized, Bob Burt, Earcandy Buzzbomb (front ported --- they are supposed to be amazing), Jenkins Sound Shop, Germino.

Personally don't get on with the stock Marshall 2x12 with the 75 watters, although It sounded better than a 4x12 with 75 watter the other day. 4x12 cabs with greenbaks always sound amazing IMHO --- Even better... the new Marshall oversized with Heritage greenbacks... deep and smooth

Seems the the new Celestion Heritage G12H30 and Greenback speakers are the most toneful of the Celestions so I reckon you can't go wrong with a 4x12 loaded with those.

Peeps rave about the Scumbag "scumback" 25 watters, Weber VST speakers and the Tone Tubbys.

*Hearsay only* --- As far as 2x12s... Mesa Boogie 2x12s are supposed to be awesome.

I tried an amp through a THD semi-open-back which was nice and full-bodied and not boxy.

Jimmy Herring, Clapton, Santana... they can't all be wrong. I love them... the hemp thing is like whatever... more of a marketing thing IMO.

I'm in love with the 1912 Marshall Cab, closed back, 1x12" lots of bottom and dirt cheap.

The Tonetubby website should be boycotted for design reasons

The oversized Marshall 4X12 straight Salt & Pepper "TV model" (IIRC) just smoked all others in our cab shootouts for heavy tones. Should be right up your alley.

Original, early seventies Hiwatt SE4123, 4 x 12" cabinets with original magnesium basket Fane speakers, or the newer late seventies, early eighties Hiwatt cabinets with 75 watt, metal basket Fanes. They sound good with Vintage 30's as well. Those Hiwatt cabs have a nice solid bottom. This is my opinion compared to hearing various Marshall cabs with greenbacks, V-30's, G12 M, Peavy and Mesa cabinets. My friend has a Fender Tone Master cab with 4 vintage 30's and it sounds bloody great. Avatar make a decent cab as well.

Thanks everyone. Welcome madstrat, gearslutz is a cool place.

I'll check out the Avatars and the Tone Tubby. I'm also looking for a well built cab, the handles on my Marshall's start to rattled bad when I crack them up. Are Boogies quiter?

My fav recording cab is a '75 basketweave with 2 greenbacks and 2 vintage 30s. Put a mic on one of ea and choose the best or blend later. It always sounds KILLER. It's a slant cab btw.....

Just my personal opinion - I'm not real big on how the Boogie cabs record, they seem very boxy to me compared to the Marshalls and are much harder to fit into the mix. I use a straight Marshall cab with Vintage 30's, I love it for recording.

I've never found any use for the 75 watt celestions. Since two out of three of your cabs use them, these might be your problem. The speakers will certainly make a much, much bigger difference than the cab itself (kind of like mics and preamps). You should try Vintage 30's in your cabs for a modern rock sound (most everything from GNR to the present day) or g12h30's for that early 70's ballsy grinding sound (my personal favorite!). I guess what I'm saying is that you may find exactly the sound you're looking for, or even more than one sound that you're looking for from your present cabs if you get some good speakers in them. Having one cab with greenbacks, one cab with V30's and one cab with g12h's would be versatile and very, very toneful. Also cheaper than going out and buying a whole new cab.

Weber's are nice too, I own more than is good for me, but for rock, there's no reason not to get the Celestions.

I agree with Nathan. I ahve 4x12's with 75's 30's and a boggie cab....the 1960 30's always wins..........

The workmanship on Mesa cabs is excellent! Never had trouble with them.
Whenever i have to work with a Marshall cab, i remove the handles and put
some thin rubber foam between them and the cab. Works great!

Doesn't sound like a monster 4x12, but the Matchless 2x12 sounds incredible for everything other than metal.

I just went on to the Marshall site.
They only have cabs with 25's, 70's and 75's. No 30's. What's up with that?

nice pic phrygian...~

Dear James, I believe that the Marshall 4x12 in the handwired series has the 30's that you are looking for. It's a great cabinet in build quality and sound, but slighty more than the average Marshall 4x12. Sincerely, Joe Focarile

James....i gotta pitch my boyz in N. Hollywood again....Bogner. I have their straight 4x12 loaded with old 300 watt EVM12Ls. It's a heavy beast, but its the baddest tonebox around. I also have their 1x12 cube loaded with 1 EVM that is portable, and sounds pretty 4x12-like to a mic.

Since you already have 3 cabs with Celestions, you should really hear EVMs. Zakk Wylde has his own signature model 12L out now called the Black Label.

Another great setup is a mix cab with 2 vintage 30s and 2 EVMs.

bogner 1x12

marshall 2x10....not sure what model but celestion's in it...

my favorites right now..

i used to have 4 1960's of varying age...they always were cool..

i also have used a wizard cab from the mid 90's....nice

my 2 cents..

I had a new Marshall cab for a couple of years and HATED it. It had those Celestion GT 75 speakers in it which weren't horrible.....they just had too much bite to them for me. What I disliked so much was the craftmanship.....plastic (YES PLASTIC!) connectors and a cheap plastic plate on the back which cracked very easily. I also had to resolder the connections after a few weeks of owning it.

Went out and bought a new Mesa 4x12 with Vintage 30s in it.......the difference sonically and in the build was HUGE! I filled out the warranty card for it and under the "comments for improvement" or whatever section, I put that I wish it had come with a cover and asked how do I order one. A week later one showed up at my door free of charge!

Mesa!
