Presonus Gates, any good?

Hello all, I've been thinking about getting some gates. I came across the Prosonus GTX44 and it looks interesting. It's a four-channel unit with built in high and low pass filters and key inputs.

Has anybody heard them, or used them for an extended period of time? I'd love to hear from some end users. Please include pros and cons.

Thanks in advance.

GTX44

Never tried it, but I have used the ACP88 a bunch of times. I was supposed to beta test that gate at some point but it never happened. When I talked to Rick Naquvi about it he told me that they based it on the DS201. Given that and the fact that most of the Presonus dynamics stuff I've used doesn't totally suck it should be decent.

FWIW, I've had a Symetrix 564E which is a 4 channel gate with filters and key inputs. It works great and was stupid cheap used, I think I paid $275 or $300 for it. The Symetrix 2 channel gate is also really good, as are the dbx Super Gates (forget the model) and the Aphex 622 & 621.

I used a ACP 88 on drums for a live (as in live to 2trk) album back in 2000. No problems here...

I have 3 ACP88s in a live rack here at an install i house tech at. Te only problem I have with it are the gates, they allways allow some high freq stuff to leak through, they just do not totally mute signal. Not so much an issue live, but for studio work I would run into problems.

I have not used the unit you mentiones, perhaps it does nt have this problem/

Drew, what's with the pictures?

I always thought the gates on the ACP88 were kind of marginal. They work for some things but don't have enough control to be really useful as a dedicated gate.

pretty gate

You might want to think about the, I kid you not, ART Progate. In the tradition of music companies accidentally making a great product and then discontinuing it, they are no longer made, but there are usually one or two at any given time on ebay. Picked up on these guys from this chap named Bryce Goggin, who was the engi-mixi-ducer for most Pavement, early spacehog, and the last two phish albums. Again, ART progate.
