| Gear nut | DBX 160X (a general question)
Is the this unit any good for compressing vocals for (rappers/singers)? I am planing to use it for bass (guitar), guitars, and drums. |

Rap, drums, bass, and electric git = yes Singing = usualy no, but well it is doable I know several engineers that will leave a 1176LN untouched and throw a dbx160x on hiphop drums.

I've always found the 160x to be a nice limiter to just take the tops off while tracking vocals. Unless you're really looking for a "sound", like the 1176 or LA2 or whatever.... m |

I've used it quite a bit on Vocals when I just wanted to control the peaks. Did what it was supposed to. Good box for the money. IMHO

I suggest using it in Overeasy (softer knee)mode on vocals with a low ratio and a slightly higher ratio on rap vocals. I also recomend the Jim William's Audio Upgrade for the unit which gives it less of a bottleneck thing with lower noise and is most obvious to me in Overeasy mode. It still packs the punch these units are known for with the mod, but has better detail. Best of luck.

I got a couple of them in the past year. I really really like them. I use them almost exclusively on bass when i track, just knocking off a couple of db's, and on kick and snare when I mix. I love how it handles drums in the mix. I've never found the overeasy mode useful on anything though IMHO.

I like the 160X over-easy mode engaged for vocals, but disengaged for guitar and drums. For bass, I've recently discovered the 163X. |

Thanks guys. I appreciate your feedback. I purchased the 160x based off your opinions and my experience using it also. Thanks |
