Mix Mag Article w/ Daniel Lanois

Anyone see that article with DL, that had the picture of him recording with two SM57's rubber banded together on his vocal?

Anyone tried this? Just curious. Maybe it's just a cool photo op...

I was wondering about that. He was using them for vocals. What could the advantage be?

Inquiring minds want to know.

2 vocal tracks at once, delay one for a double, track to RADAR on one and something else on another, or ....

Use your imagination.

Use your imagination.
The two vocal tracks at once can be achieved by command 'C', delay by nudging the copy one or two ticks. I would rather split from the board or pre than deal with two identical mic lines.

The only thing I can think of is a stereo effect, but there would be a big phase problem with the mics as they were.

This looks like a press conference setup, where they have a redundant mic set up if the first one fails.

Yeah i mean, I'd just use a short delay if I wanted that effect...maybe he's running the second one thru some pedals or something. I was hoping someone actually 'knew' as opposed to imagining Maybe DL himself will drop by...

HEY! DL for guest mod!!

I'm very green but I'll hazzard a guess.
The only times I've seen this kind of thing before has been to send a separate signal to an effect box in real time. OK, usually it's in a live scenario, going to a vocoder or distortion box.
Maybe Lanois wants to have a separate treated vocal without patching up a second channel on the console.
Distortion, retro tape echo box, modular synth audio mangler?
