really? and how well is that working out for you?

as to the original question....don't buy gear if you can't afford it. don't go into debt if you're not good at managing debt. sell gear when you need to sell gear. don't keep pieces around that you're not using. etc etc.

Don't know if this qualifies as a "marketing technique" but...

I find a band that I'm genuinely interested in working with and I approach them. Usually at a gig, with something like "You know, I really dig that song '(insert name here)'" or "I really like your music" and just talk to them about their art and the direction they'd like to go in.
At some point, I'll usually say, "Hey, let's do a session - spend a day with me and pay me whatever you think it's worth."
If they like you, then they pay you decently (or you at least you have the option of saying, "Look, if you want to continue, this is what I'm gonna have to charge you...") and if not, you tell them (politely) that it's probably not gonna work out.
Yeah, you lose a few days, but you'd be surprised how many repeat clients you eventually garner.

yes +1 on finding a band or artist you really like and can do a good job on. Get them in the door with a well done free demo or discount demo. But They can be the a band in a style you love ,but you should make sure they don't have a "we don't ever pay for recording " attitude. Just like me . People will call and ask questions and have money to record so I will talk with them for a 20 minute period . Then ask "How soon are you all looking to record? He might say oh sometimes next year. Ask the right questions. Back to the gear.
The US might loose our credit rating do to our massive debt. People laugh ,but there could be marshall law comming soon. It's your duty not choice to buy as much equipment as you can while you still can.
We MUST ALL SPEND LIKE DRUNKIN SAILORS on 3 DAY PASS Before going off to war!!
...I am sort of serious. When clients see new gear it doesn't hurt though.
GT.

tbh im gonna say if people do take your customer i would not take ti personqlly, i have had people who have takken my customer before in the past. iwas so anoyed
__

i was thinking WHAT THE **** ARE THEY DOING. but then i reaslise they are doign stuff that the customers wants. and then i realised the truth, no point of being pissed offf, so i booked an appointment in his studio [not goin to say the name] but said im a studunt who wants to learn how you guys mix and stuff and i even brought my own studio's file from my studio. and he didnt even realise that i was from another rival studio in the area. but it wasnt even about a business thing. The gear slut who are true gear slutz realize it about perfecting your own skill and making recording sound how you want the to sound!!!!

what matters doesnt always matter or does it?

I have found that most artists and bands dont give a shit about your gear, they only care about your skills and your abilitys and your attitude. I find many of my clients have no idea what any of my gear does or what its for, they simply like what they hear as I turn knobs and move faders and that keeps them coming back and refering me. Othertimes I come across studio savvy musicians who know there shit. Either way its an important business if you want it to be. If you have a small group of clients that you always work with then you will gain there trust and they will recommend you helping your client base grow. Contacting other studios is good if you wish to network. I have built up a very good network with other studios around town so I can freelance or get extra work when a studio is overwhelmed with work. If your business justifies your purchases then you are on the right path, If your purchases do not justifiy your business you are going to run yourself into the ground. Its a business animal that needs money to feed it or it will die.
