Can I get a show of hands?

Who here edits out the bleed in-between Toms and Floor Toms? I always do but it's really time consuming. I'm considering getting the new Softube Dyna-Mite for the expander option to maybe save me the time in editing. So if you do this kind of editing please say so. If not and have found success in other methods please share.

depends on a bunch of things.

loud rock music with 421s on the toms - usually

softer music with a 414 or something - rarely. but in those situations i might not even use the tom mics to begin with.

I always edit them. It only takes like 5 minutes per tom track it takes less time to edit than it is to get a gate setup.

Unless the guy is Neil Peart how many fills are in an average song?
I can't imagine it taking more than 10 minutes to edit a tom track manually

If you bring it in soundforge there is a region tool or you can simply use a gate there to isolate the toms and edit inside soundforge.

Or you could simply just insert.................a gate

It depends how they sound in the mix. sometimes the Tom bleed helps the drum sound, some times it hurts it.

Yea I've had the snare singing and then muted the toms it lost something. Sometimes I run automation on the toms and keep some of the bleed and bring it up on the fills and sometimes I mute them depending on the song of course .

i always edit the silence in the toms.
and a slow fade out after the tom hit, anywhere from 2 to 4 bars for the fade.

A plugin gate preset can work just fine, maybe lookahead for the leading edge, and just adjust the threshold and release. Strip silence also works if there was poor isolation, though that is a bit time consuming. Ungated toms can make a set sound pretty vast though...

Only when they sound bad to me. I usually like to use the bleed I get, but on a more modern rock track I'm more likely to clean things up.

I usually edit, I like the overheads to fill in the ambient picture in between tom hits, usually the tom bleed doesn't sound very good to my ears and makes things cluttered. But there are no rules, sometimes it could be used. FWIW, gates just aren't the same, but they can be good for a quick setup with good drummers who hit hard most of the time.

It totally depends. I don't do it much any more. I think it helps the drums some times. I have some gates I like to use when I really feel the need.

Unless it's a jazz record I almost always edit the rack toms, and I always edit the floor tom.

I usually find the kit sounds more focused once they are edited. If the cymbals sound too swishy, I might replace with another hit.

I edit them. If it's a lot of toms (metal) I edit them as a group.

I like it especially on the floor tom cause I ad a lot of bottom and you hear that ringing when it's idle.

usually... depending on the track... it really only takes a few minutes to do the whole track... think it took me ten mins to do a 5 min track with 5 toms and quite a few fills... i agree it's the kind of thing you look at while your editing and you put it off for as long as you can but once you start doing it it's not that bad.

Yup, I edit the bleed for rock and modern sounds... Sometimes an expander does the trick though.
