DBX, DDP....Why didn't it catch on?

Anyone have any opinions about the DDP? I have 4 and consider them a most valuable asset to my arsenal. but now DBX has droped them from their line-up. why?

I'm sure if DBX (part of the Harmon group) dropped the product it is because they weren't making enough (any?) money from it.

i dont think they were selling, which isnt to say they werent good. if you want a digital compressor you just work ITB, why bother using an outboard processor with the problem of latency

Funny you guys should bring this up now!

I have a DDP and at the time I bought it, it was one of the coolest things I had...
even bought the digital card for it.

I don't use it much but have been looking at it again. even dragged the manual out last weekend.

I can probably assume that if I use the digital ins and outs I get better sound as I bypass the converters with my Apogee. Would not trust this as a final compression pass on the whole mix. Don't know if it's worth going thru the Apogee for a submix compression though, as the Rosetta is my only two converter channels.

I wonder who uses the DDP and for what lately.

Great, great little box! Used it a whole lot back in the day, very smooth compression, wonderful EQ... I never tried any of the zillion presets, just always dialed in the dual setting where you were free to adjust it to your needs. It still sits in a rack.

I don't know why I haven't turned it on in years... I guess time has just moved on.

Dbx ddp

I'm considering buying one of these with the digital option...

I'm wondering how this product stacks up ion the current market? I know this is an old thread but I'm hoping some folks out there who use this still can provide some feedback on how it sits in their set-ups and whether it's digital option is up to the standards of todays A-Ds?

Any takers?

I still use it, I mainly use it for processing tracks coming out of a drum machine into the DAW, I sinc my DAW up with the drum machine and run each track out individually, doing that, I am able to use the DDP to fatten up a kick, or smooth off hi-hats, spread out synth, ect...it sounds good to me, and once you know what all the functions are and how to scroll thru effiantly, to me it's very user friendly..

I don't know about the digital option, mine doesn't have one, if I remember correctly the digital chain is thru AES EBU

I own two DDPs, both with digital options. Since I have a Motu 1224 and 308 (no mic pres), I use the DDPs as digital inputs. I have my external mic pres plugged into the DDPs and use the Type IV and light compression to control clipping.

However, the display is going out on one of them. So, off the shop for repair. :(

Two

I had two DDP's one in the live rack and one in the studio. I used to do mixes in the old days of Digital Performer where I'd run every track through the DDP. One unit wouldn't boot up one day with a "checksum" error on it and I could never get an answer to what the problem was. I think I still have them lying around here. They get pretty hot when running for a while.

My DDP still waits.

I have my DDP sitting in the rack too. I haven't used it in years. After reading this thread I'm tempted to crank it up, maybe even just for the tape emulation. I thought of selling it a few times, but I have a hard time letting go of Gear. Ah!
