CD-R, audio or data

Quick "hardware" question. When doing low budget projects where you need to deliver the mastered finished product to the client, is there a preference to using either data or music CD-R's? And do you find a particular brand to be of superior quality? Thanks,

Forgive me if i am misunderstanding your question:

As far as i know, a burnable CD is a burnable CD - no difference between one that is for "music" and one that is for "data". (Unlike DAT tapes where there is a definite difference.) There are different formulations which sometimes correspond to the color of the CD, but I've used various brands of silver and gold CDs without ever having a problem. Perhaps certain burners might prefer one to the other though.

Where there might be a prolem in delviering an audio CD to a client is that many of the newer CD-R's are 700 MB capacity. If your client has a fairly old CD-player, the 700 MB CD's might bot play on them - so you might want to keep a supply of 650 MB CD-R's around.

If you are talking about sending stuff to a mastering studio, I usually send data rather than audio (checking first to see what formats the studio prefers). This allows me to send 24 bit (or 96k) files to be mastered. An album length project can usually fit on 2 CD's unless you are sending a whole bunch of alternate mixes to the mastering engineer.

THanks for the reply littledog, that's kind of what I had gathered. I was just curious because in the past I've run across c.d.'s that would not play in certain players (c.d. , dvd combo boxes) but would work in others like a boom box or in the car. THanks again

Just for the interest:

Don´t buy audio CDs.
When a burner prepares an audio CD it writes sort of a related ID intro on it.
"Premanufactured" audio CD means only that this is already written on them.
It´s a marketing trick, no reason to spend for it.
