What do i need for surround in Logic Pro?

Asides from the obvious (5+ matched speakers and 1+ sub) what do I need to have an effective surround sound setup in logic pro?

I currently have a Digi002R with Logic Pro and i'm working with a lot of film students who would appreciate surround sound and I myself would like to be able to start learning surround mixing/remixing. I have the Event 20/20 BAS stereo monitors currently and they work well enough quality-wise for now, as do the Digi convertors.

Do I need a bass management/speaker management system, surround encoder (isn't there something built into Final Cut Pro for making the surround files for DVD?), and what surround plugins are available to logic? Im' not getting PTHD or Nuendo. Logic is to my current tastes (as I know there will be comments about the platform).

Thanks,

Bump again...

Tibbon, did you go any further with this? I'm thinking of using Logic 7 in the same way for much the same reasons, and would be very interested to hear of your experiences.

Thanks

I too am interested

I also want to get into 5.1 and am not sure how to do it non PT
I have on order the Final Cut Suite upgrade and their version of PT for film which is Soundtrack Pro (not as good as PT but suited for film) It has 5.1 mixdown and encoding but, I don't know how to interface the computer (Mac Pro series) with the hardware. (amps and speakers)
Sorry if I sound uneducated...I'm an old analog fart.

Nothing yet

No, no progress yet. I got a different audio interface (Mackie 400F) in a pinch (waiting forever for the Ensemble, but I got a Moog and the Mackie instead... very happy). However asides from that, my funds have dried up.

I never did figure out EXACTLY what I needed, but I did figure out a few things.

1) It would probably be useful to have a surround joystick. Automated would be nice. I think that JL Cooper has something like this. It's hard enough to pan a knob with a mouse, let alone move something in space.

2) While it seems that Logic will take care of a bit of stuff, I think I need something to encode to various Dolby formats. I don't know what will do this. I remember in Protools there was a plugin for this.

3) I would need some sort of monitor control system. There's a few solutions for this

Tascam seems to have a neat one, but I'm not sure what tascam knows about monitor control: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DSM71/

Grace has the m906 system, but there's no way i can afford it.

Coleman has a nice looking system: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SR51mkII/
Seems they know their monitor switching and control pretty well.

4) While not a requirement at all, one thing I'd like to do is go to Best Buy and get a consumer cheapo system to check everything through. Just need to make sure everything in the rear is actually audible on a 'normal' system.

BlueSky has their 5.1 system for a rather good price, but I think I might try to get the smaler Dynaudio monitors if I ever find the pot at the end of the rainbow.

Hey Tibbon,

thanks for the update. Heartily approve of the Moog over gear that never materialises! I've done just a wee bit scouting on the net, and found a couple of things that might be helpful going the Logic route; both from SOS....

1. August 2006 'Logic: Getting started with Surround Sound'
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug0...ctech_0806.htm

-however, only downloadable if you're a subscriber. Think it becomes a freebie in 3 or 4 months time.

2. August 2001 - April 2002 'You are surrounded: Surround Sound Explained'
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Apr0.../surround9.asp

- these ones are freebies.

Given the way surround-for-music seems to be dying a slow death, maybe we're all chasing rainbows....
