| noise cancelling headphones for ipod any recommendations? I'm interested why they market these things for convenience and quality and don't mention safety, surely your ears are much better protected if you don't have to have the volume of the music up to cancel out background noise. thanks!

| I bought a set of Westone in-ear monitors a year ago which really made a huge difference. They have become my magic bullet for long distance air travel. I can now actually hear every bit of movie dialog at a very comfortable volume. (You need that little mini plug-jet audio adaptor that's on the end of the airline's headsets). I then unplug from the movie and they become earplugs- you can nap , listen to music etc. and the stress level on my body is way lowered so that a 6 hour flight feels like about 3 hours when I land. I loosen them once in awhile to let my ears breathe. It was amazing to see how much stress the continuous sound level had been causing. |

Diddo. These work great and sound really good compared to the cheap white ones you get from apple! | |

| yeah! I spend about 100,000 miles on the plane each year, and I've tried more than a few. I like the Shure E5s, but the way the cables are routed over your ears bugs me. Good sound, not too much detail, but decent. Not cheap... I think my faves are the etymotic ER4P from www.headphone.com. A little bass-weak, unless you get the seal with your ears really, really tight. Unbelievable detail in the mids and highs - digs details out of your music you never knew were there.. Not cheap either! I usually carry both these and the E5s everywhere, and choose one or the other based on what I'm listening to. If I could only have one, it would be the etys... They both cancel the noise just by being earplugs - there's no electronics involved.. Bose? Noise cancelling works at some frequencies, but not all, basic sound, nothing great. Not cheap, and not worth the cash, IMO.. Mike |

| Compared to the cassette Walkman's of the 80's I find the output amplifiers of the iPod's to be much more considerate to hearing preservation. Even cranked it's nowhere near what it used to be in consumer products! |

| Used to use noise cancelling headphones on flights. The Shure headphones recommended by others above work much better at blocking out the background noise. I've taken to use them during recording since they block out sound better than closed back phones, a lot less leakage than from cans, and they sound pretty good. Took a while to get used to them in this application, but now I quite like them. js |
