Anybody close miking distorted guitar with their Beyer M160?

How's it working for you? You like it? What kinda preamp are you using with it?

I've been using mine as a room mic on cabs but I might try some up-close-and-personal on my next heavy guitar tracks, and I'd love to hear what you have to say...

Awesome... do it.... Watch out for loud guitars with lots of low end. I have heard M160s fold (and distort in a not good way) when pushed hard. A M160 + dynamic flavor of the month is pretty rocking.

Hi Ian, thanks for the response. (Love your rampant lion - I'm a Scot myself) I'm going to use a pop filter on the 160, and I think I will stuff an old Unidyne 57 or a 421 against the grill.

Anyone else? How about an M130 for room mic? I'll try that tonight too.

Thanks, Robert. Someone PM'd me that they also use a 512 with their 160 close miked. I think I shall try that right now, like this:

Close mic: M160>512>1968ME
Room: M130>BAE 1073>1968ME

That oughta do it

Back in the day I tried a M160 on Marshall cabs.
I used it with a Demeter VTMP-2.
It never worked on it's own for me.
I recall it being WAY too nasal sounding.

I can't recall any impression or memories of using it with a dynamic like an SM57 or a 421.

For the last twenty five years my "go to" mic set up has been a 57 by itself, a 57 with a U87 room mic (in a good room) and a SounDeluxe U95 back about 2 feet from a cabinet leaned back.
Obviously the U95 was not 25 years ago, but I did have one of the very first ones.
Great mic and I just missed one for a good price today.

I always prefer it a 6"-12" out. In general I prefer a bit of room between cab and mic rather than right up on the grill.

slap a blast pad in-between the mic and the grill then crank it up!

I just got a stereo pair of m160s in and the first thing I did was throw one up on my Marshall 1960 slanted cab. I went center of the cone with the m160 and put a Heil PR30 off center. Both mics were placed right up on the grill cloth. I sucked out the low end at 100hz with the Waves API 550B.

I normally use a 421 and the PR30 for recording distorted rock guitars. I don't think I'll go back to the 421. I'm loving the m160 on guitar so much. The high end was there, but it wasn't harsh, which is a major problem I've had with my JCM900 head. It was smooth as ice. I did some A/B tests with recordings that I've really liked their distorted guitar tone, and this stands right up to it, without any processing other than the simple low cut.

M160 is a great mic. Apparently it was good enough for Hendrix.thumbsup

Oh, and I was using an LA610 on the m160, with the compressor bypassed. The Heil was going through an ADL 600.
