Best Headphones for Tracking?

Hey guys. I just thought I ask to see what everyone's favorite headphones are for tracking. Right now I'm using the Sony MDR 7506. They sound good, a little too good. In fact I get a great sounding tone in the cans but when I hear it back on my nearfields it doesn't sound so good. I've heard people say that the Sony's add too much high end which makes them nice to listen to but bad for tracking.

Can somebody recommend a good pair of flat headphones? I also own an AKG 240M but I don't like those as much beacuse they are ported and more sound bleeds in. Thanks in advance!

Sennys HD 280, perfect for tracking, super comfy to wear for hours (very light!), NO sound bleed!!, accurate flat sound, loud if needed, sennheiser built quality, replacement parts easy avialable... hundred bucks, need to say more??

AKG K270 here. Excellent isolation, good detail. Problem is they're discontinued in favor of a K271 model, which is not similar wrt isolation. K270 do show up on eBay for $60 to $100. I'm still buying them.

I'm curious about the Sennheiser model mentioned above.

Senn 280...a perfect bargain (coming from a lifelong 7506 & AKG 240 user).

Encases the ear superbly, minimal leakage, good quality sound...unbeatable for the price!

The Sennheiser HD280 have been my "go to" tracking phones for a couple years, but they have to take a back seat to the Ultrasone HTI.550s. They're similar to the 280s in isolation and low freq. response, but give me better definition and seperation on hurriedly dialed-in cue mixes.

i used to have the senn 280's,
but then the headband died,
and the cans also started sounding brighter and brighter.

i just picked up a pair of beyerdynamic dt770's pro (80 ohms) and i quite like these so far.

Senn 280...(also from a long time 7506 user and 240M user)

My 7506's finally died this year after 7 years of great work!! I have AKG 240 m but don't really liked the sound...a bit too hi-fi for me.

But I replaced my 7506's with the 280's and whoo-hoo...Super comfy and they sound great.

I don't think I will go back to the Sonys...

AKG K270. Superb for tacking IMHO. Otherwise, Senn 280 or Ultrasone.

I used both, sen HD280 are much better IMO.

HD25 are good for djing but the lead is too short .
150's are ok, not as quiet as the 280 and not as good sounding.

right on. Beyer DT770's rock. lows are kind of weak, but they are the best sounding, most comfortable cans in that price range.

just my 2 cents

Here's a vote for the Beyer DT770's...good isolation for tracking/OD's, and pretty darn accurate. The low end can be a bit strange, but such is the nature of most sealed closed back phones. They're a little harder to drive power-wise, but is not really an issue unless you're sharing a headphone jack with another model headphones.

Aren't the DT770 closed design? I think I tried those and found them too boomy. Also I prefer open or semi open. I have the DT990 which I ended up liking over the Sony or Sennheisers.

Like always try before you buy!

yeah for tracking i really don't like open cans.
i dig the dt770s a lot, i like the bass.
for super authentic bass i have my hd650 opens.
for tracking, i hated the high end on my pair of hd280s. i think they were f-ed.

I love these for Drum tracking;

http://www.remoteaudio.com/hn7506.htm

You will loose some cool factor but they are excellant for tracking. Some people don't like them because they are too tight, while others get a littel freaked out because it is so isolated. Cheers and good luck!

these are great. i use em daily. blocks that room sound out more than any other phones. check them out if you track loud guitars and drums. if you have an isolated control room then you can just use em for mic placement (very cool). if you do not have a totally isolated control room then you will get even more use out of them...

not the most hi-fi of all the phones but still have the 7506 drivers everyone knows and the isolation factor is really exceptional...

sometimes when i'm tracking drums in a really loud room I have the drummer put on a pair of Shure E5's (in ear monitors) then put a pair or gun shooting earphones over them. that way they only hear what i'm sending them. they always see to love it.

How well would the Senn HD 280's do for synthesizer work and mixing (in a pinch)?
